Why isnt mine 4wd?

I have a 2002 runner sport edition my parents bought used and was passed down to me. every other sport edition i have looked up is 4wd but for some reason mine isnt.... i've searched different years and models but it comes out the same... Is it possible that 4wd was a option that wasn't chosen by the original owner when he/she purchased it?

Any comments are welcome i just want to know why mine is non 4wd and every other one is...

I've seen many sport edition 2wd. It's just what your parents ordered at the time.

Your 4Runner was built as a 2wd.

To be honest though, 2wd 4Runners are still very capable off-road. The only areas I would not taking would be low traction surfaces such as mud or snow.

4WD drive is great and all but 99% of the time im only using 4wd to play and go up things I have no reason going up but fun. so if your just looking to have a capable reliable vehicle dont worry about 4x4.

If you buy a new one, 4WD functionality should be restored.

Could also be that your 4Runner is a badly done chinese copy of a genuine 4Runner.

Where did it come from?
Many especially in the south were 2WD since there's no snow and were all order basis.

Up here in the great white north, 2WD isn't even an option.

Mg dad, despite loving to hunt, never bought a 4wd truck. His reason was that insurance was too high on it. When he needed 4wd capability, he borrowed my uncle's truck.

4wd does not increase insurance cost. My 97 4runner 4x4 cost less in insurance a month than my 98 Civic and that is considered a safe fuel economy car.

Maybe not in AZ but in the South here owning a 4wd truck costs about 20% on average more to insure than a 2wd of the same make and year. More parts to fix and replace when junior takes it out for a spin and plants it into the swamp.

I need 4wd on wet grass. Seriously.

lol, same. Maybe my tires are part of the problem (BFG Mud-Terrain retreads), but in the colder temps up here, 2WD is utterly useless once that tire rubber hardens a little. I get stuck on the smallest ice patches or whip around corners way too easily.

4WD makes it behave like I want it to as opposed to the unpredictable 2WD in low traction conditions.
