Ok, so I've read a whole lot of tire threads (and there are a lot).
The one theme that permeates all of them seems to be that eveyone hates their OEM Dunlop AT20s.
I have a 2004 Limited V8. I need new tires, and I am trying to figure out if there is any scenario under which I should simply replace my AT20s with the same thing.
First my driving situation. Most of my driving is highway. I live in New Jersey so while we are not snow bound all the time, there is always the chance of a major snow storm resulting in a complete mess. Northern New Jersey is seriously hilly so there's the going up steep hills in the snow issue from time to time.
I also from time to time get into the mud, when I go camping, fishing or some other such thing in the country. I don't spend any time on the rocks (though I'd like to try it some day - sounds like fun, but that's another thread).
My experience with the Dunlops has been fine. That is, it seems to do well on the highway. It hasn't failed me in the snow, and I have not gotten stuck in mud (though I haven't experienced any really challenging mud since I've had the vehicle so that may be an unfair claim).
Also, my tire guy says the Dunlops are on special for $129 right now (by way of price comparison he says they are normally $149 around here).
So I have no particular complaints about the Dunlops. On the other hand, there might be another tire that does all of the same things I need but better for the same price or perhaps cheaper, or perhaps does everything at least as well plus one thing even better.
In short, given my needs, is there a no brainer upgrade from the Dunlop or is it possible that the Dunlop is the tire for me?
Oh, and I'm not looking to spend a ton more money, but if there is a really compelling reason, I'd consider spending more.
