Why so many beefs about the 5th gen speed?

Dang what a bunch of bored peeps.

I have been mucking about with my 4th gen...according to the ScanGauge2...at 230hp I would get 17mpg.

After messing around with a couple things, today it hit 295hp(ScanGuage2) and 13mpg.
I am at least 5k lbs. with all the steel insurance bolted on.

One thing about these motors, as others have noted, they have to be howling to make the HP.

What did you mess around with to get 65 hp?

No chance of a supercharger at all.

People could be lying to me, but I can't imagine why... and I have 2 different sources giving me the same info. Seems like it will happen at this point, but I'm not promising anything.

He is talking about a calculation that the sanguage will spit out.... Not actual HP....It means nothing.

Yep. I get it but hate to see anyone buy a scangauge and expect that kind of increase.

Unless you guys start dyno tuning and post real numbers..just stop.

K&N 63, URD MAF calibrator, 70mm TB, URD 70mm TB adapter and Magnaflow 24" muffler.

Not trying to bust your bubble.. But that HP calc is based on airflow read by the MAF. You calibrated the MAF... (meaning you tricked it to read more or less air) so the number changed... You may have very well gained a little power, but not 65 actual hp....

No busty of my bubble...err, something like that.
Just reading the numbers the ScanGauge2 spit out...I would like to test it in some REAL world method...it is definitely faster than it was. Race ya!

Who has a Dyno around Central Oregon? more than happy to test it.

Nearest one I've been to is in Portland. Had my Cummins tuned and tested with them.

Your add on accessories have done little for the engine and power. It emptied your wallet though..

Lol.

Taking readings off off the MAF compared to what hits the tires...is completely different.

Definitely not a TRD supercharger. I remember reading about the thread where they kept messing up the "roller rocker" valves or something and Toyota deemed it not reliable enough to pursue. Maybe at some point URD or another 3rd party might do it but I believe it will never happen due to the way the 2010+ V6 is built. I have been watching this for 5 years now and it's not happening IMO

Its funny you mentioned that because I think that was the first thing the wife complained about when we were out looking at 5th gens haha.
Here is how that conversation went:

Yota engineer: Hey we added all these nifty knobs and do dads to the TE but we have to remove the sunglass compartment.

Yota engineer 2: It's OK. They will be wearing their sunglasses all the time since there is a ton of glare off that sweet non-functional hood scoop!

Yota engineer: Cool! Wait a minute what about at night? Where will they store their sunglasses then?

Yota engineer 2: I'm sure the owners will use any number of the nifty compartments we designed to store them. And I bet no one will complain since we designed such a bad a** SUV, they won't even think of little things like that!

I could be wrong, but I bet that's the gist of how that went!

Man I thought I posted yesterday apparently forgot to hit reply. I didn't have any accessories on my other 5th gen but I drive her like a bat out of hell. Throttle response was never great but she was fast to me and I loved pushing her to the limit, especially on the turns. I drive a 3/4 ton work van so driving my 4runner after that is like driving a sports car in comparison

4Runner acceleration

I've got a 2zz-GE powered Corolla. It's got a custom 2 1/4" open exhaust. Last fall sent the throttle body to MaxBore , he will bore & taper your TB to its maximum safe amount. While that was being done I pulled the intake runners & plenum and basically did a port match , mild bore and finishing. Nothing too drastic. Toyotas in general have well designed and fairly optimized intake & exhaust manifolds. Much better than pretty much any of the domestics, Hondas are pretty well designed also. So got everything back together , it definitely helped the low & midrange throttle roll on and response. Just had two short drives afterwards as it was time to get that car in storage for the winter.
The guy at MaxBore claimed he had yet to bore a 1GR-FE TB. He has done some previous generation Tacoma & 4Runner TB's. The 5th gen 4Runner has a composite (plastic) intake manifold so modification is not going to happen.
Next month should have a TRD air box installed. I'll pull the TB and see if it looks like much improvement could be made from factory. So I may be the guinea pig for this mod. Ideally it would be great if some aftermarket would design, flow bench & dyno an aluminum replacement intake manifold for the 1GR-FE.

No offense but if I ever took the time and money to do that type of work to a Corolla my wife would probably throw some D cell batteries into a sock and flog me to death.

I am not being a hater either... I have also riced out my fair share of Hondas back in the days including a Integra Type-R and a 5th Gen Prelude, but after stepping back with perspective now, total waste of cash. It just wasn't worth it in the end.

There comes a point with certain cars that you just accept it for what it is, and love it for what it is, and enjoy it for what it is.

If I want to project a car I look at the platform first before jumping down a rabbit hole. I also know you are applying that example to a 4Runner but I bought Toyota trucks for reliability. Last thing I want is some joker from MaxBore creating MaxProblems for me.

My 2 cents. A Lot of people whom add all the Mods forget one simple thing. They forget to change the Gear ratio from stock gearbox to handle stock wheel/tires @270 HP.

With adding 33's with 2-3 inch lift with 33plus size tires and added height heavy roof top mods will add wind drag. (basic Aerodynamics). The Start up speed isn't going to be the same as a sports car or for that matter a stock built 4runner. Adding things that make life off road better, doesn't help one bit ON ROAD!!!

Since 2012, I've been through several vehicles:

2012 Tacoma 4WD
2013 mazda speed 3 turbo
2015 Tacoma 4WD
2016 Tacoma 4WD
2016 Mustang GT

My current vehicle, 2016 4RUNNER, with 285/70/17's has plenty of power. Just returned from Colorado & Utah, mashed the pedal and it took off. Plan on keeping this one for a long time, love it !
