Why Toyota...

Why on earth would toyota install/make a release clutch fork boot with a hole in it???

Dirt, Mud, rocks, water, just about anything could fly into it and ruin your clutch...

Is this right? Is yours like this? Is that why I need a new TO bearing? Is that why it's all rusty inside?

Is it a breather thing or some cooling function?
Any thoughts, suggestions???

Good information on the other reply, but that thread doesn't explain why Toyota put a hole in the boot, or if that is how it is supposed to look..

Can I seal it up?

I should be getting my baby back soon. New clutch and rebuild tranny.

I'm thinking of sealing the boot up. I live in the mountains and drive on dirt roads, cross creeks and lots of rain/snow.

Will this be a problem?

Maybe it's to air/breath the clutch?

Any thoughts would be great...

it looks official to me. i wouldn't seal it up.

but to avoid debris to land inside there, you could cleverly weld a "mud flap" below it horizontally. that would deflect any pebbles and most dirt. water...well thats gonna require more. haha.

That's funny...

Maybe I will make a L-bend made of rubber pointing up and put a filter on there. This will allow air in and out, BUT with no dirt, sand, dust, or water/snow getting in.
