Wide angle mirrors.

I like having the best of both worlds -- a view of the edge of the vehicle and the entire blind spot. A multivex on the drivers side and a big spot mirror on the passenger side give me just that. Being able to see the side of the vehicle gives a quicker, easier reference point to return to if I move a mirror (or it somehow gets moved). I often think to myself or say to people riding with me, "man, it's nice to have good mirrors".

I have always used them in the bottom outside corners (you can see parking lines much better the lower you place them).
Pep Boys sells some blue tinted ones that look nice and are very functional. Definitely go with the round ones. Once you get used to them you wonder how you made it without them. As stated multiple times above, it makes parallel parking and seeing parking lines so much easier!
Also does as stated- eliminates blind spots! After you get to know and trust them you won't be turning your head anymore to double check, which in stop and go traffic can be an invitation to trouble.

The small inside rear post mirrors (if you have them) were designed to allow the driver to see movement to either side of the vehicle while backing out of a parking space. Especially when you are next to another SUV or a van. They don't allow for much detail, so I have not found them useful for parallel parking or seeing my hitch while backing up to a trailer.

As for the side mirror issue, Uneek is right on. If you adjust your side mirrors properly, I find I don't have any need for the small convex spot mirrors. There is a site that explains the method to adjust the mirrors to eliminate blind spots.

I found it, as they point out, different from what I was taught (old school), but once I got used to it, I can't see any reason to go back to the old method.

I figured thats what these mirrors were for but i have found them to be totally worthless. do you ever actually see anything in them!? cuz i sure cant

As I said, I only find them to give one the ability to see movement on either side as you back up. You can't really use them for much else, at least I can't. I find that if I am between two other SUV's, and trying to back out of a space into the aisle, they are somewhat helpful to see a person or vehicle moving up the aisle to either side, but thats about it.

Ah, a little thread blast from the past.

My son is driving my truck frequently now with his permit. The 4runner is no doubt ruining him for any substandard mirror setup, but that can only be a good thing.
