Wierd Humming/buzzing noise at idle

OK...I have 200,308 miles on my 1998 SR5 all original parts including the spark plugs. It goes without saying I am a firm believer "that if it ain't broke don't mess with it"..so in keeping that in mind I am now a proud owner of a wierd humming noise that seems to only happen when the vehicle is at idle. This started on the way home from work tonight the vehicle shifts/accelerates/stops etc...as it normally has. The noise seems to be coming from the rear and only at idle (700-800 rpm) it is strong enough to vibrate (faintly) the steering wheel and pedals but disappears when the vehicle hits 1,000-1,500 RPM. When I press the window switch it gets louder. I am leaning towards a fuel pump but did not know if anyone else had any thoughts? I also turned off the AC/radio when trying to determine the source.:ybrick:

Oh my God dude, 200K on the original plugs, seriously? Ever clean the throttle body, IAC, or MAF? Tranny, t-case, diff fluid changes? It's time to start messing with it now.

Yep I guess...its time to address all those. I have done all the preventative (timing belt, waterpump,..etc)... I just found this site and will begin the rest.

Did you ever find out what the humming is? My 98 is doing the same exact thing. really annoying and I have no clue if this is going to be a costly repair. I dont even know what it is! same thing, humms and vibrating at idle... any thoughts?

Clean the TB AND IAC.

The Humming seems to be coming from the Altenator. I have a neighbor who's a Toyota Mechanic and we have narrowed it down to that using a stethoscope. The problem is that the altenator is putting out the correct amount of power. I have to take it in and get the timing belt/waterpump etc...and idler pully changed part of the whole preventative maint. I will have the dealer look into it at the same time. I also just replaced the battery so that was not causing the hum...I need to get the Spark Plugs and wires completed. The problem is that the Truck is running perfect and I am not gonna mess with it unless it needs it. Seems like everytime I "modify" something to make it "better" I wind up replacing it twice as fast.

If the dealer comes back with the same diagnosis about the Altenator then I will pull it and put a new one on. If I was not so close to needing the timing belt and other items changed I would not wait and I would replace it. More to follow...

Did the altenator fix this problem? I have a 98 2wheel drive with the V6 that started doing the samething. Humming noise that seems to come from the rear at low idle and when parked. I thought it was the fuel pump so I replaced and found it went away for a few days then came back.

Thought I would bring this post back up, did you find out what the cause of the humming? I have a 98 with 210,000 miles and I have the same sound. It's only I idle and I can feel it in the steering wheel. Has to be the same thing

Hey just wondering if y'all ever found out what the problem was? I have a 98 with 200,000 miles and have the exact problem. Humming at idle and gets louder when using power windows or when I cut the air on?
