My wife backed her minivan into my 4runner. Because my 4runner is lifted, she hit the quarter panel on the minivan. Its like $1000 to fix her minivan. What do you think I should do with the 4runner? Should I take it to the shop or buy touch up paint? It looks like the only exposed stuff is plastic. If I take it to a body shop, what should I expect to pay for this?

Good news.

It looks a lot worse then it really is....unless it's wrong to assume your wife's minivan is white.

Step 1 ~ Buff the hell out of it to get rid of the white paint.
Step 2 ~ Buy some touch up paint...unless you are extremely meticulous like me in which case get an estimate at your local body shop for "plastic welding".

It shouldn't be any more than $150 and that is WORST case scenario to get it lookin' like new.

Good luck and tell your wife to adjust the rear-view next time : )
 
Ouch. The fender looks like it should buff out without repainting (good news). The rest should buff out except the black marks. The fender flare and the bumper's flare can be replaced or repainted. I think those come painted from the factorytoo. The bumper can be repainted along with the flares instead of replacing. Painting plastic is a little bit trickier (color matching and adhesion), have a reputable shop do it. I've seen shops to poor work and the paint just flakes off. You can also touch them up with touch up paint, and then wet sand it, polish and buff.

Ok here is the real deal. You take that to a body shop they are going to definetly want to do body work. You may not be able to see it but with scrapes that bad the damage is more than likely through the clearcoat on your paint. Damage through clearcoat = new paint. Its pretty much that simple. Plus, I think I see a small dent on fender. Run your hand over it. Can you feel it?

So here is a preliminary estimate based on limited pictures.

We will figure on $40 an hour (not sure exact IL rates)

1 hour repair fender = $40.00
Repaint fender (partial repaint as damage on front 1/2) 1 hour = $40.00
Overhaul bumper (remove bumper from vehicle and all the attached parts for a repaint) 2 hours = $80.00
Repair bumper (1.5 hours) = $60.00
Refinish bumper (1.5 hours) = $60.00
Remove headlight (needed for refinish of fender) .4 hour = $16
Remove stone guard shield (same reason as headlamp) .2 hour = $8
New bumper extension (fender flare part on bumper) = $80.00
Remove fender flare from fender (for refinish & repair) .4 = $16
Repair fender flare (1 hour) $40.00
Paint and materials cost = $80.00
===================================
Total: $520.00

Expect something like that if you go to a bodyshop. Its pretty scary how fast these things can add up.

My advice would be to buff the hell out of it and see if you can get all the scratches out. After that see if you are happy with how it looks. There will still be residual damage but it will look loads better. If your still unhappy, take it to a shop.
 
Thanks guys! When I got home, the white marks was just dust. So the only real stuff is the black marks. Gonna try the touchup paint method. Thanks again to all that responded! Especially the quote from the adjuster!!! thanks!
 
Sorry to see what happened to your truck. In my opinion, it looks too deep to fix with only touchup paint. As a few other members mentioned, maybe try buffing it out before replacing.
 
1st off you need to have Beet come over and talk to your wife. Then he can hit it with some compound. Rub one out and a bit of wax.

I just went through almost the samething because someone at the parking lot did the same number to my Wife's and then took off so I had decide if it's worth taking to the body shop or do it myself. I decided to do it myself but let me tell you it was not easy (and I took Body shop when I was in high school).

First is to find the right paint, I decided to spray and since the damage area was small (almost identical to yours but on the driver side), I found the factory color code, 1F7, which is listed on the driver side's information label. Then I ordered both the paint in spary can and clear coat from www.expresspaint.com

Once the paint arrived, I needed to prep the whole surface and fill in the dents with platic filler. Now here is the trickly part, I knew I had to paint the whole bumper to make it look right but that was too much work. I decided to only paint the damage areas.

After many hours of sanding, masking, spary painting, sanding, clear coat and then wet sanding, the areas look almost o.k. But because I did not do the whole bumper, there are a lot of curvetures in this bumper (and the fender), it is just not perfect.

the paint and supplies costed me $60.

One thing to also know that if you spray, you need a dust free room. I achieved this by sealing off my garage openings with plastic bags and running a HEPA room filter overnight.

If I had to do it again? I get a new bumper or take it to a body shop.
