Will 285/70R17 Tires Fit 2008 SR5?

Did my 1st offroading in Ouray this past Sept. and got hooked.

Just bought a new 2008 T4R V6 and just found out Toyota lied!! There book claims 9.1" ground clearance but I measured only 7.5" under the engine. WOW!! Big disappointment. They did not include any footnotes so to me ground clearance means ground clearance.

To get more clearance I plan to install larger 285/70R17 tires. Will these tires fit ok? Currently have 265/65R17.
Please advise.

You can go up to 265/70/17 which are an inch taller so you would gain 1/2" of clearance . I think 285's require a lift and a trim.
 
No, hoping not to do a lift just yet. Maybe after driving the car for at least a year, then add a 1 to 2 inch lift in the front.

Can you please help me understand the problem a little better.
I have measured forward and aft of the original tire, 265/65R17, with the wheels straight and turned to both extremes and I am finding more clearance available than the one inch larger radius needed for the bigger tire.

I put a 12 inch block under one of the front tires and still have more than 2 inches clearance between the top of the tire and the finder. Note, this car has a huge torsion bar up front so 90% of the body rotation occurs in the rear. The front for the most part stays lined up with the front tires. Therefore, I don't see one of the front struts ever bottoming out except for very extreme situations. I'll take that chance for rubbing at the top in this case.

Also, the new tire section width shows to be 1 inch wider. My measurements shows more than 3/4 inch clearance all around the back side of the original tire. Therefore, It looks to me like all of the struts, steering, swing arm parts should clear the new tire with the additional width.

Please advise what I am overlooking and what is incorrect in my conclusion. I am new at this and trying not to make a mistake.

Nope, you'll need to lift it. The largest you can go with stock height is 265/70/17, and even then you still might need to trim SLIGHTLY, but most people don't have any rub. For 285's I believe you will need 3 inches of lift in the front, but at least 2".
 
Torsion bar? I believe you are referring to the sway bar as TB's have not been used in any of the recent 4runner generations (well not for the last 10+ years).

The problem with adding 285's (approx 33" equivalent) tires are:

Under full compression it will rub in several areas depending on key scenarios...
1. Entering a driveway (of any kind that will compress the front). The suspension is very soft so you will compress quite a bit depending on how fast you go.
2. Full lock turn (either right or left) for u-turns or just turns in general with some acceleration.

areas that will be affected by the rubbing:
* front lower edge portion of the bumper
* upper control arms (possible - depends on tire and configuration)
* body mount under the front firewall/foot well area

These rubbing very significantly depending on tire and wheel combination.

Theoretically you can add 285's but considering your suspension continually cycles as a result of the type of terrain you drive (whether it's a pot hole, speed bump or even some random object you run over), the suspension will compress/decompress causing your tires you cycle up and down. During these instantaneous moments you may experience rubbing. Excessive rubbing can be minimized by properly adding a lift or making the proper modifications to accommodate for the larger tires.

The experimental static testing you've done does not truly show the dynamic loads applied while the vehicle is in motion. If you really want to test the full range of motion you'll want to completely remove your front suspension and then use the tire and cycle up/down/left/right to see where the rubbing will occur. This is the only way to truly understand where the affected areas are.

Information for all.
Just installed the 285/70R17 BFG All Terrain A/T.

No significant rubbing occurs except for the upper control arm and this occurs only when fully turned. Back off steering 1/4 turn then no problem. Also, this contact occurs at a point where the metal is very smooth and I don't expect any serious problem for me because of this.

The aft mud flap or the front plastic inner panel are not a problem at all. The front panel can be moved forward and upward very easily if more clearance is desired. The tire barely misses the mud flap.

Adequate clearance with respect to all other parts.

Placing a 10 inch square block under a front tire, also ok.

All the above is very interesting reading so at the last minute, I switched to GY Wrangler Silent Armor 275/70R17. However, am finding many previous comments do not seem to apply in my case. Will try to respond to several statements later.

I think I just figured out how to add a picture.
Will take some new pics and try to add them in a day or 2.
 
How do you like the Silent Armours so far? Any rubbing with that tire size and no lift or is it about the same as the BFG's?:worthless

Sorry for the delay.

Only slightly touches the upper control arm and I mean slightly.
Just relax the full-turn only slightly will stop all noise. A piece of tape on the UCA is still there. Very slight rub. Also, recall the metal is very smooth at that point. See the UCA pic on my new 285/70R17 Thread

No other touching, lots of clearance.

Pic later. I finally got it to work.

Tires

I have 05 4runner 4.7 liter,
3 inch lift tough country
1 inch wheel pacers. What
size tire would perform better?
285/70/17 or 275/70/17?
I really don't want to do any trimming.
