Will a rebuilt 22re engine from an 87 runner fit in a 96 3rd gen?

Just like the post says.... Will a rebuilt 22re engine from an 87 runner fit in a 96 3rd gen? I dont know anything about these 22re's so this might be a really dumb question.... the engine i have in the 96 now is knocking.... Does that mean i might need a rebuild/new engine? It can work if you have the time and money...why downgrade? I believe the 22re is obd1 and the 3rd gens are obd2. Why not look for a replacement engine?

This. You can make anything fit anything with enough time and money, but no, the 22RE won't drop in. That'd be a lot of work for a big downgrade in power. The 22RE has a lot to recommend it, but oomph is not one of those things.

the best replacement engine i can find is still $850, the only reason i was considering a 22re is because it was low miles and only $450 so if i got the v6 for $850 i would be looking at around $1000 plus the cost of the runner.... worth it?

There are also generally legal issues with engine conversions involving engines older than the vehicle. Varies by state, so may not be the case for you.

Nope. The 22RE won't drop in, you'll need new motor mounts, transfercase mounts, driveshafts, you'll have to get crafty with splicing the wiring harnesses, and you'll be left with a seriously underpowered truck when you're done. If you can do all that yourself, there's no reason you can't rebuild the motor you've got for 1/5th the price. If you can't do it yourself, you're going to find any 4x4 shop is going to charge you several thousand dollars at least to do that work for you.

even if it would bolt right in, its a terrible idea. the 3.4 is already severely underpowered. I cant imagine trying to pass someone on the highway at 75 with the 22re. Not trying to be harsh, im just stating the necessary facts
