Will Bilstein 5100s at .85 hurt my resale?

Will they? I know there's not a definitive answer, but just wondering if I need to go through the trouble of putting stock shocks back, or if a dealer will not really care.

it shouldn't, but sell it yourself instead of trading in

Thanks for the input! I know trading in isn't normally the best thing to do, but I believe the tax savings in my situation will most likely make it the difference pretty small.

I doubt anyone would really notice .85 unless you tell them, or they are fairly savvy. I don't think I've ever traded a car in where the dealer has done any sort of in depth inspection, put it on a rack, etc. Most do a walk around, run the VIN, and maybe drive it around the block.

I will say that I had a dealer tell me once that they couldn't give me as much for a Tacoma I was trading in because it had an aftermarket suspension; they claimed it couldn't be resold as a certified pre-owned so it would be sold at a loss. I believed this to be untrue and opted not to do business with them since I cannot abide liars. They didn't notice the suspension upgrade, I volunteered that I had it.

Private party sale, if the person is savvy then the upgrade might actually make it worth more to them. If they aren't savvy then it's a non issue.

This is what I'm thinking too. There's sometimes a pesky check box asking if there are "aftermarket modifications" and I don't want to be dishonest about it, though.

I just traded in a '12 Ram, 2500, 6.2l that had 5100's all around with 295/70r17's and sat dead level. Dealer never once looked at tires or suspension, ran the vin and got his "Ram" guy to come check it out. They didn't care about the bedrug, bakflip cover, weathertech mats, tuffy security lids, backup camera, nothing...so i took it all and sold it.

I'm not worried about .85 on the 4Runner, that's what I will put on first.

They're mainly looking at more major things. Previous body damage, frame damage, etc etc. At the end of the day, shocks are wear and tear items therefore it's not uncommon for them to see replacements of those parts that could be of a different brand. My philosophy is to never mention anything before hand and let them figure it out on their own.

I know this isn't necessarily what you asked, but dealers DO care if the truck was off-roaded, and aftermarket parts could be their first clue to start looking a little deeper. The depths to which they can check for damage from wheeling is sort of limited but they will commonly check for mud in the engine bay and damage to the frame / undercarriage among other things in order to give less on the trade.

If I planned to trade my 4R in, I'd definitely stick to bolt-on parts that are pretty easily reversible back to stock and then I'd restore it before I went to trade. I do believe the truck would have to be stock to qualify for pre-owned certification. Maybe some of our resident Toyota staff could chime in? BlackWorksInc

When I sold cars, our used manager really didnt care about aftermarket accessories. As long as the job didnt look like garbage or damage the vehicle, it didnt affect your trade in value.
However its best to hold onto as many of the original parts as you can. We had a guy with $10k in accessories on his dodge that didnt increase our offer at all. Swapped all with the original parts and got the same trade in value, only now he has $10k in stuff he can sell or add to another truck.

^^^True that. ^^^The way most people see it a 4X4 looks a little better with some clearance. .850" is not enough for your average buyer or dealer to notice. I traded mine with .850 up front and the dealer sold it within weeks.

It's a 4Runner, we don't need to keep them pure stock for a classic sale later. Most can't tell and it looks better but does not look lifted.

Honestly, I think if you add just the right parts, people would spend MORE for your 4runner in a classic sale. I know I would...

Certified Pre-Owned past 100k means nothing. I'd even say past 75k miles.

Good suspension.
Good Roof Rack.
Good upgrades

Nothing cheesy are flare-y...I'd say go for it. :)

I'd pay more for this...and it's mostly aftermarket stuff. Wayyyyy better looking rig than a trd pro imo.

When I traded in my 2011 Avalon and my 2003 4runner on my 2014 4runner the dealer did not drive or look under the vehicles at all. The 4runner had a spacer lift and I told them the transfer case had a small leak. They both looked really clean. They gave me a really fair price for both and I only had to pay sales tax on the $7500 difference in price. I would have thought they would have at least set in the seat and started the engine. This is a small town dealer ship and I guess they trusted me. When I was undecided on if I wanted the new 4runner they told me to take it home and drive it a few days before deciding. As long as the dealer continues to treat me like this I will no longer deal with trying to sell on my own.
