Will dual transfer cases fit in a 3rd gen keeping the factory gas tank.

Hey all, just wanted to get some advice before investing in a dual transfer case set up. A buddy of mine is giving me a gear driven transfer case that already has the 23 spline input gear. I was going to buy trail gears dual case setup with plate to connect it to my auto transmission and the adapter to connect it to my factory chain driven transfer case.

My question is will it fit with the factory gas tank? I measured it and there is about 9" of room, the transfer case should add about 8.5" of length. I have read in some threads that it will fit but it requires removal the crossmember and tank for to install it, but the tank will fit back in once the t-cases are installed. It's no big deal to pull the tank but I don't want to put it all back together and realize the tank won't fit back in and I'm out $1000 or so in adapters and a new crossmember.

Has anyone done the doubler and fit their factory tank back in? Thank you for any advice.

Thanks guys I appreciate it, great information. Mine is a 99 SR5 4Runner with the standard J shift manual T-case, not the push button style like in the limited. I might have to modify the crossmember that the gas tank attaches to but other than that I think it will fit. I will make sure to post all of this to my build thread to help other builders in the future. I think I can make it fit.

This is my build thread for anyone that's interested.

So is the '99 SR5 J-shifter case not as wide as the Limited version with the push button "AWD"?

I have a '99 limited and from what I've read, most sources say most automatic trans models are extremely snug fit for duals.

I could have invested in duals by now, I just haven't b/c of (what I thought) the modifications that takes it to fit in there.

I'm not sure of the exact dimensions of the two transfer cases. I just climbed underneath and measured. The only thing I'm worried about is the crossmember that the gas tank mounts to. I might need to modify it or grind it down a little. I just don't want to have to change out the gas tank.

After doing some research I think I'm going to use the advance adapters transfer case housing, it's twice as strong, premilled to fit the 4.7 gears, and it's only like $200. With the 4.70 crawler gears for like another $500. I did a lot of reading about the 4.70 and the only negatives came from guys running a single case. With the dual cases you run Hi in the front and Low in the rear for 2.28, the rear in Hi and front in Low for 4.70 (which is the same as dual cases 2.28), or both in Low for an insane low crawling gear. It just seems like a good investment while I have it all apart.

I got some really good information from Rock Solid Toys forum. Here is the link to their dual transfer cases in a Tacoma with a 3.4. It's a good read.

I will make sure I post pictures of the install and the problems I run into on this thread and my build thread.
