Will I regret not getting a 4WD?

My username reflects what I want, but my local dealer doesn't have any 4x4's. I live in Oklahoma, and while I won't be doing any serious off-roading (other than gravel roads that lead to my fishin' hole), the only reason I would really need the 4wd is for the occasional snow. This local dealer is making it hard to turn down a silver sport edition 2wd v8. Will I regret it if I don't hold out? Is to too late in the model year to order one to my specifications?

I trough all V8 were 4WD??? and yes when you plain on trading it in or saleing it your resale value will SUCK with out 4WD.

Are they? It doesn't say 4wd on the side, only SportEdition. It has the V8 emblem on the front though.

If I was purchasing a new vehicle... I would get exactly what I want, otherwise your better off saving a bunch of money and getting a used one. That is unless you are getting one hell of a deal on the 2wd. If they are having that much trouble selling it then that should tell you something. Personally, i'd never buy a 2wd truck. Kind-a defeats the purpose. But, on a brighter note, you will save a bundle on insurance costs.

I thought the same thing too, but when I looked into it when I got my truck it turned out that it would only save me like $100 every 6 months. I have State Farm, maybe its different with other companies?

The truck would still be nice without 4WD, but for me I wanted either a RWD sports car to fling around the track or a 4WD SUV to go off roading with. I'm an advocate of using a car for what its meant for.

Yes, you can buy both V6 & V8 in 2WD. According to Itelichoice, the 2WD is cheaper in the long run, including depreciation. I have had members Private Message me and say, will I regret the choice of 2WD. I say, if you have any doubt's go with 4WD, plus writing posts on this forum, most people writing have bought 4WD.

As you see I own 2WD and I really don't miss it. So for me it was a good choice. I plan on keeping this sucker for a long time. By the way, it hasn't snowed in Atlanta in about 2 years.

Not true, when the a 4WD V6 (4th generation) is put into 4WD it is exactly the same as the V8 4WD. That is, it can be driven full time in 4WD on any type of of road condition, including dry pavement.

He is right... you have to push the center diff lock to be in "4wd" as opposed to the "awd" you get when you do the turn switch.

That may only be $100 every 6 months, but thats $100 you could be putting into your rig!

I recommend you get exactly what you want, other wise you'll be second guessing your decision for as long as you own it. Doubt can play some serious mind games :arrow:

If I am not mistaken Oklahoma dealerships are supplied by Gulf States Toyota (just like Texas), If you are willing to take one of the 4runners Gulf States Toyota has in stock, and the dealership is willing to work with you instead of selling what is physically on their lot, you should be able to have a 4wd sport in a couple of days.

Cool...thanks for the suggestion. I had wondered if they would be able to get what I want from their supplier or another dealership. I've been by a few times on Sundays, but I guess it's time to actually talk to somebody at the dealership. I guess I should stand firm in what I am looking for. If they want to sell one bad enough they'll find it...

You've got that exactly right. Make sure they know you are a serious buyer. If you are like the average 4runner buyer, as judged by this forum, you still have your baby teeth and peach fuzz.

Show up with a wad of $100s and flash them at the fleet manager (don't talk to the first line sales puke). Also, show up on the last Sunday of the month.

Too, if you don't get what you want and you settle for what they have, you aren't going to be happy in the long run.

It's a buyers market right now, as opposed to what it was just a year ago, when supply was short. You should have no problem getting the truck you want (a little more or less), but your dealer has to know that you will pay off if he goes the extra yard. Almost all dealers will want to sell you what they have, not what they don't have.

a 4runner without 4WD is a waste, your resale value will not be as good as a 4WD. At some time 4WD will come in to play and u don't have it, you will bang your head on concrete and swear you should have gotted the 4WD. I have read and talked to some people with 2WD and the REGRET it. So......... Go with 4WD and join the elite.

Don't forget the new 4runner 4x2's (2wd models) are pretty capable. They still have traction control on the rear axle, providing pseudo-LSD effect. In addition, you still get VSC (stability control) and BrakeAssist. VSC is vital to highway safety and emergency maneuvers. BrakeAssist helps decrease stopping distance and improve reaction time in panic stops.

Fancy stuff nowadays whether you pick 4x4 or 4x2.:thumb:

I am going to disagree. Intellichoice shows how much each vehicle cost you for 4 years. I plugged in a 2004 4Runner Sport V8 with 4WD and 2WD. It will cost you $37,261 for 4 years of ownership for the 4WD and is rated "Better than Average" and the 2WD will cost $34,918 and is rated as "Excellent".

Intellichoice takes in factors like re-sale value, insurance, finace, maintenance, etc. Bottom line the 4WD will cost you $2,343. Sometimes cheaper really means cheaper.

I have a 4x2 and haven't regreted it all, but then again I don't take mine off anything more than a dirt road and don't plan on it. It never snows here in Birmingham and if it does, it would melt within a day. I have had a 4x4 and loved it, but when I had it, I treated it as such and it became a money pit. It was fun, but it wouldn't be practical for me now. I have a friend with an incredible '84 4Runne, so if I ever need to hit the trails, we can bash his. Mine is cleaner today than the day I bought it and it is almost 2 years old. I use it for work and have to drive people around, so I like it being clean.

It is all in wheat you want it for. if you think you will be trail riding, I would wait for a 4x4. If you get the 2 wheel drive it might be ok on the trails, but you will regret not getting the 4x4. Just don't let them push off what they have on their lot. Get exactly what you want or walk away from that dealership.

4x2 or 4x4, you are going to love this truck. I honestly think just driving a 4Runner is how you become one of the "elite".

Its not something you will ever realistically be able to change. So get what you want and don't settle. Its not like getting a model with the low end stereo. You figure I'll just upgrade it later.
