Will lift void warranty?

to answer your question directly NO NO NO!!!!

installing a lift will not void your warranty

screwing something up during the install can void the repair of that particular item.

something breaking as a direct result of the lift will void the repair of that item only, and the burden of proof is on the dealer.

IT WILL NOT VOID A WARRANTY.

This post lacks common sense
and yours is what? Chocked full of it? you people kill me with this warranty crap. a dealer CAN NOT deny a warranty based on a mod. They CAN deny a repair if said mod is the CAUSE of the issue. Sure they will tell you that they are denying the warranty because people (such as yourself) roll over and raise the white flag. Numerous Mag Moss violations have been successfully defended and most don't even see a courtroom. No dealership is going to waste time and money going to court over a repair.... they all talk tough until you show them you aren't going to accept their answer and you are sitting in arbitration across the table from them. rebelbowtie I can google every mag moss post I have made and you are the first to run and say something stupid but to date you have yet to provide anything substantial to dispel what I am saying. As said in numerous posts until you can provide some case history to refute what I am saying then your post "lack common sense".

as I thought

No, as I thought. You are one of the very few people that don't understand that certain modifications give the dealership and manufacture the right to deny warranty work. A lift is almost always accompanied by larger tires and wheels adding more stress to the stock parts. If those parts fail the warranty can be denied because your modification made them fail. You can't argue that a 33 or 35" tire doesn't increase the risk of broken CV axles, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, drive shafts, u joints, your transmission, brakes, everything in your drive train. You can't argue the truth plain and simple. MM act won't help you either, MM act is to protect your ass from denied warranty work because you used a different brand of oil or changed your head lamp bulbs. NOT things like lift kits, significantly larger tires, custom tuning, super charger, cams etc...

Come on Guys, at the risk of sounding "Sober and reasonable" Two things I try and avoid at all costs. Considering the basic thread question at face value isn't the answer really (In Fact) NO.
We all know it can be a bit more involved like What all accompanied the lift AND what Failed but.... in and of itself - a Lift does NOT VOID the Warranty.
If ones radio-air conditioner-sun roof-power seat- etc/etc Fails the Lift will simply NOT cause a claim denial. I still retain a modicum of confidence in our system of Justice and Contractual Obligation ALL of which (believe it or not, Defaults to the favor of the Consumer NOT the Corporation)
The "Boogey-Man" really only existed in our minds and maybe under our beds, NOT in the local Toyota Service Department.

Not sure if it voids warranties (in whole or specific parts), but I can say this: I'm past the basic warranty at this point. I'd rather have the lift & pay for repairs (or do them myself) than not have it because I might need something replaced before the longer warranties are gone. I like the results & it makes the truck more fun to drive. If I have to pay more to get repairs at some point because something failed, so be it.

Technically, Yes it will void your warranty.

In reality, No. Most dealer's don't want to turn you away by blaming an issue on a non-issue. They want happy customer's. Toyota as a whole is huge on that whole customer service thing. If they try anything on you, find another dealer.

take a stance here... you originally say it voids the warranty now you say the "work" which is the repair I am referring too... maybe we are talking the same thing but you just are not very articulate. It doesn't give them the "right" The consumer has an equal dog in the fight when arguing larger tires have an affect on a lot of those items you listed.... there are a lot of factors such as weight of said tire. You can break any of those items just with driving style. Again the point you are missing is burden of proof... it falls on the dealer. We can argue this all day long the fact is you are wrong on many points..... although you keep changing those points so I can't keep up with you. I will agree to disagree and let you continue to pay unnecessary charges for repairs. Good day, thanks for the entertainment.:biggrin2:

3" quote

I talked to a dealer yesterday and was given the same generic quote about it being under 3". I'm about to buy a new 2017 and I plan on getting that in writing - will report back in a few weeks if i'm successful at that endeavor.

For future searches of old threads brought back to life here's my input...

I just had my OME installed (14SEP12) by my local Toyota dealer they said anything 3" or less will not affect warranty.

Good luck getting anything in writing.

The better dealer here in Denver that does my Toyota Care oil changes says 3in is the physical max without major modifications. That I'm sure is well discussed on here. They also told me a lift it won't void the warranty. They just won't cover none Toyota parts. Unless you have some really shady dealer, I wouldn't worry about it.

Any word on getting this in writing? Just bought a 2018, and an extended warranty. Thinking about cancelling the extended warranty and getting my money back, especially if it won't cover parts "affected" by mods.

It's all on the mechanic/dealer and their opinions. It sucks, I actually deal with this every day at work.

One thing to keep in mind, the mechanic is paid nearly twice as much for a paid customer repair versus being covered under warranty.

magnusson moss really leaves it up to their discretion if a modification is the cause of the damage, it's not like you can appeal their decision or anything so if you lift and they say your lift killed your CVs or something you can try to complain to toyota corporate but you're basically at their mercy

As many lifts as I see at Toyota Dealers, that are add-on's by said dealer prior to initial sale, I would have to say that a mild lift will not void anything.

Someone mentioned a Denver dealer earlier. I was at Stephenson, I think it was, a couple of months ago, and they had 5 new 4 Runners on the lot with 3" Toytec lifts. Durango Motors in Durango, Co. where I bought mine almost always 3 or 4 lifted Tundras, Tacomas, and 4 Runners on the showroom floor.

My dealer installed my lift and said that the warranty would not be effected.

I have modified every car I have owned over the last two decades, and have dealt with this issue on several of them. I'm speaking from experience, based on the dealers and manufacturers I have dealt with. I will say, though I have modified my Toyota already (lifted in on 5100's and Dobinson's springs), I have not dealt with the local dealer or Toyota yet....That said, my experience is;

1. You can quote the MM Act until you're blue in the face. It's a consumer law issue, which gives both sides rights.

2. This is most often a dealer specific issue. Some dealers are mod friendly, some are mod adverse. You have to know your local dealer and what their thresholds are "before" you go in there and try to demand service be covered.

3. If your mod is in a direct link to a part failing (a lift installed and a CV fails), you should expect to have to pay for that repair. We've all heard "you play, you pay" when it comes to mods.

4. If the issue is serious enough, I've know owners who have sued or taken dealers to arbitration, after appealing to the manufacturer's regional reps for assistance. Time consuming and often fruitless is the gist I get from those threads. In the GM performance community, there are several posted experiences of owners installing catch cans, devices which simply filter out oil from the OEM breather systems. Nothing more, nothing less. GM dealers have denied engine warranty work simply based on this passive modification. I once had an extended warranty company attempt to deny injector work on a Duramax engine because I had a passive electronic gauge hooked up to my OBD port. Tried (unsuccessfully) to claim it could have an effect on my engine......

5. Bottom line......There is no definitive "yes" or "no" answer here, regardless of what anyone says.

Took my 2016 Trail to Toyota dealer this week and requested a tire rebalancing and was told condition I felt was a needle bearing in front differential. Also told by dealer that my 3" Icon lift results in all repairs (normally under warranty) involving my suspension will NO LONGER be covered. I got a different diagnosis and warranty decision at a different dealer on same day. ????

wonder if the dealer does the install of the lift if that changes anything
