Will removing the cat, but leaving muffler make 4runner louder?

It seems that my catalytic converter is clogged. Instead of paying for a new one, I think I'm just going to have the shop replace it with pipe. Will that make it louder at all if I leave the stock muffler on?

the flow rate will be increased so it will be a bit louder but if you have a good muffler then it shouldnt make a big defference.

Am i mistaken or is it illegal to run no cats if your vehicle came from the factory running cats? Like Bad_Vision mentioned, there will be an increase in sound due to increase in exhaust flow rate.

lol i have a RX7 with no muffler or cat, my one car with a 1.1l engine takes 14 prius drivers to cover my carbon footprint.

I would reccomend a high flow cat

i was aboutto buy a 95 4runner that had the cat cut offf and straight piped. its loud and sounded like straight ****. other than the non workin a/c, leaking break fluid all over, burn holes all over, rust spots, and other problems he didnt mention before i drove the 2hours to look at it, i didnt buy it.

I have no cat or resonator, just header and a Dynomax Super Turbo. It's a bit droney inside the cab but it's not terribly loud outside.

It will probably sound quite a bit louder without the cat in place. Back when I used to own a 5.0L Mustang, a lot of guys would remove their cats and run the stock mufflers and it was quite a big louder that way.

Today I'd never remove the cat because I don't want to contribute to polluting the environment any more than I would with the cat in place. It's just not a good thing to do.

I hear ya Doc. This probably won't be a permanent fix, but I need to figure out how much the rest of the bill is before I spend the money on a new cat. I will probably have to run it like that a while until I get the money/desire to put a new cat on it.

$10,000 fine? We don't do emissions testing down here so who would know?

You can get a new aftermarket cat for about $300, so it's not that bad. As far as fines, around here if a cop suspects you don't have a cat, you can get nailed for it. I have a friend who got caught when he was pulled over by a cop. Some guys used to weld the cat shells around the pipe to make it look like the cat is in place.

Yikes! Doc, I drove my K1500 Blazer around town for years with no cats and glasspacks and never got bothered. Hopefully that means the cops are more lenient around here than where your buddy lives!! I don't doubt that that happens though

I Live in montana (no emmisions testing:bravo: ) and i'm currently doing some exhaust work on my 97 sr5 v6. i'm thinking that i might just cut the cat out and replace it with a pipe. Do any of you guys know if that will trip the sensor thats after the cat? what could i do about the sensor or will i be fine?

On my old 2nd gen someone stole the cat and i just put a pipe in and no problems at all. only effect was little more growl to the sound and 1-2 mpg better!

Anyway - back to the original question. I did a 3" cat-back on my 93 T4R, and added this kind of cat along with a Flowmaster muffler. It's does sound good to me!

Almost like having no catalytic at all.
