Winch Advice: Warn 9.5ti

I know I don't need a 9,500lbs. winch, but there is one local for sale for $400. Looks to be in good shape from the pictures, but I have not seen it in person yet. It is on a new Tundra currently, so I can't imagine the guy had it offroad much, but I havent talked to him about his usage yet.

I know the price and general good reputation of the Smittybilts, so that would be my first choice if I hadn't stumbled upon this one.

Anyone think this is a bad idea if the winch is in good shape?

I've had bad luck with used winches, but if its on a street truck, you might get lucky! I got the smittybilt and it's an awesome unit.
 
where did you ever get the idea that Smittybilt is better than Warn?

I'd personally take a used Warn any day over a new Smittybilt
 
I would love to score a used Warn. If you do have any problems Warn will stand by their product and rebuild them and you get a pretty much brand new winch.

My thoughts were generally along these same lines. The winch is a pretty expensive model new, and parts are available online. Thanks for the input.
 
Your a fool if you don't buy it... Even if your only going to resell it for a $200 dollar profit. But I think if you had time to post this the winch is gone... a Warn 9.5ti sells for like $1700 new... And I have seen then sell in less than a day for $700 here, and I have bought all of my warns used, never had a single problem, and even had warn completely rebuild my xd9000 for me and they charged me nothing.

Don't really have any intentions of reselling, but yes, I had thought of that.

We'll see. I emailed the guy back. I found it on Friday but was leaving town that afternoon. I would be surprised if it last through the weekend. If it did, I will be headed to pick it up this evening after work.

WOW - guy emailed me as I was typing - winch is still there. Headed to pick it up at 6pm. Will let y'all know how it goes. Hopefully it is in good shape.
 
Well - had to drive an hour one way, but I think it was worth it.



Looks to be in great shape other than the wire rope being poorly spooled. Free spool works smoothly and powered in and out nicely. Truck it came off of was definitely a street ride - 2010 Limited Tundra with Michelins on it...

I'll take both of those as votes of confidence in the winch. Sucks about yours. I have my concerns about that... Not sure there is a good way to deal with it though.
 
just an FYI with that winch, it will need to be installed with either an open top plate bumper, or a tube bumper, and might require some trimming of the grille.

Thanks for the heads up. I have an open top plate bumper, but I think the grille is DEFINITELY going to need some trimming...

It was built envisioning a lay down non-integrated solenoid winch unfortunately...
