Yes, I've searched for this topic to learn you guys really like hidden winches. So I wanted to ask anyway.

So I have an addicted offroad front bumper coming and I'm looking at winches, specifically the sealed 12.5rs to install when I put the bumper on. On the pictures it looks like the bumper mounts the winch on a vertical mount but on a sites description says only foot forward mounting. Has anyone used this winch care to explain if it can only be mounted vertically or if it's just the strongest mounted foot forward?

Also I have a gobi rack, cbi rear bumper, and the 115lbs front bumper coming. With the weight of the winch added, is a 12,500 lbs winch over kill? They have the 9,500 or 12,500. The shop I'm talking to is saying 12,500 but friends who I trust say 9,500.. Thanks.

Foot forward is a vertical mount. It means the foot of the winch is on the forward wall of the bumper. I'm using a ComeUp 9.5s and it hasn't had any problems on the 5 or so occasions I have used it. Including buried to the frame in mud. It's been in there right at 3 years now. The 12.5 you are looking at also comes with the ability to "clock" the clutch end to match whatever mounting position you need to use so the handle won't be difficult to reach. Looking at it you will probably need to relocate the remote plug box. Mine is bolted to one of the 2 support struts that hold the nose in position. I have noticed a couple of the 5th Gen bumpers use a foot forward mounting system, so that shouldn't be a problem. I say shouldn't but I am not 100% on this.

I think from you saying you've used it on the exact vehicle and my friends who say I'm good I'm going to go with the 9.5 and I'll keep a snatch block in my recovery kit just in case. Looking at both on the site it shows pictures of the mounting positions. The 9.5 has 3 positions: vertical, horizontal, and upside down. The 12.5 only has vertical. I'm going to play it safe.

I can't help with the foot forward mounting question, I'd call and ask. But as an fyi if you are going with a ComeUp, the control box has two dovetailed rails in it for mounting which happen to line up with three existing holes on an upright below the passenger headlight. Depending on your bumper it may be difficult to access the controller plug though. I went 9.5k but depends on your usage, 12k seems like lot for a 4Runner. Best of luck.

I think from you saying you've used it on the exact vehicle and my friends who say I'm good I'm going to go with the 9.5 and I'll keep a snatch block in my recovery kit just in case. Looking at both on the site it shows pictures of the mounting positions. The 9.5 has 3 positions: vertical, horizontal, and upside down. The 12.5 only has vertical. I'm going to play it safe.

Yes, my SSO bumper has a flat winch plate behind the bumper. And JSparky has his control box mounted in the same location as mine.

I hooked mine up to a FedEx Mercedes Sprinter van a couple years ago (left side sunk in a muddy ditch) The winch was pulling that fine until the van dug in and the winch started dragging the 4R forward. I had to let some line out to get to better traction and use reverse gear to pull him the rest of the way out. Bad idea but it got the job done.

12.5 is likely much more than you will ever need. I expect it is also very slow.

you would probably be better served with the 9.5. plus you get an extra 18' of line.

as to the mounting position, foot forward is stronger by default. its possible they call for that mounting position for the 12.5 simply for strength. with a quality mount, and hardware, the traditional foot down position should be more than strong enough.

Thanks a lot for all the help guys. I've decided to go with the seal 9.5rs. Now the order and wait game. Lol
