Winch or rear locker?

I do not view lockers as a recovery item. Some times you can get high centered or worse off line. A winch will help you recover your vehicle from an unfortunate situation.
An example. This past October I was driving up in the mountains on a well cared for dirt road. No big deal right? I wasn't off road yet. Well It happened to snow the week before. I had no problem going through the powder snow but then the road turned to an incline turning road. Well with snow packed tires ( off road Mickey's), incline, turning road just made the vehicle drive straight. I got into a position that if it kept going straight then I would go right off the side and down the hill. I couldn't go backwards and I couldnt go forwards as the vehicle would just track straight no matter if the wheels were turned ( snow was fresh) and worse yet slide even more towards the edge. Luckily I had a winch and just winched my self around and out of the incline portion of the road until the road was straight and level.
The point to ask yourself. Is your plan to recover your vehicle? Then get a winch. Are you losing traction? get a locker.
I have gotten out of three bad situations with a winch in both snow, sand, and mud.

A heavy duty "Come-A-Long" has always been my choice!
Sometimes with a winch you're limited on the direction of pull..... not so with the "Come-A-Long" ! Also you save a lot of weight!
Just be sure to have a bunch of chain or "Straps" handy!
Yea it's slow but it NEVER FAILS!

IMO, on your 85, I'd go winch.
Lockers are cool, but yes they can get you farther in and stuck deeper to. A winch whether electric or hand and the gear to go with it will get you or the folks with you out. The gear to go with the winch is just as important.

Your first investment should be a Hi-Lift jack, preferrably the 48" model.
This jack can be used as a come-along. Along with some recovery straps
(a must), you can get out of many difficult situations.
After that you can add a winch. There are adaptors to use the winch
to pull backwards. Some add another hitch receiver to the front and
mount the winch there. Then, the winch can be moved to the rear receiver.

winch roller feed
If you have the winch roller feed then you can go about 90 degrees from direction of the nose of the vehicle. That is what I had to do this October in 3 feet of snow.

I vote to get a locker, you can easily(yeah will take longer, etc, etc) substiture the winch with a "come-a-long" or use the high-lift with the right equipment. Most people tend to use their lockers way more than their winches, maybe post a poll

Lockers take you farther and through tougher stuff. And just think: having to winch out of everything... That sucks and definitely ruins the fun of wheeling.

Seriously tho, I echo the Hi Lift suggestion. You can do amazing things with a Hi Lift: jack, winch, split wood (really!) even extrication duties, like ripping open doors and pulling roofs off of wrecks. It is a Must for lifted rigs as stock jacks won't reach.
Otherwise, a come-a-long is a good choice too. I would carry both myself in the rough stuff.
If I bought a winch, I would get one of those receiver kits too, and attatch it to both front and rear. Sometimes you don't really want to keep going forward!

man this is to easy. weld the rear....dirt cheap if u dont have a welder. with the money u saved from buying a detroit, lockrighr or something similar u can buy your winch. dont forget the cost to install a real locker, unless u can manage that
