Wind Noise Coming for front Widshield

I just purchased my 2005 4Runner last week, and today when I was driving to work I noticed that there was a noise that was coming from the driver side windshield up at the top. The noise started at 35 mph and continued all the way through 70 mph. When I got to work I though that there was a branch or something that was making this noise but I did not find anything. Has someone here experienced this noise before or something similar and how was it fixed.

maybe the previous owner had the windshield replaced and it wasn't sealed properly?

check the rubber strips along the windshield at the top. mine sticks out a little on the right side and sometimes makes the wind noise. i just push it in once in a while and the sound goes away for a while.

If you have a bug shield, are you sure it's not due to that? The bug shield on my 3rd gen used to whistle at speeds over 35 MPH.

Is it a wind noise or a rattling sound?(not sure what made you think it was a branch) My roof racks rattle, and I took them off for the winter, until kayak season comes back around. Sounds like a grinding noise, almost. I heard it about 5 days after I bought my '07 this summer, and it freaked me out.

I had no idea what was going on, till I isolated it to the racks. It could happen anywhere from 35mph to 75mph, but mostly 65-70. They were screwed down tightly, but the cross bars rattle inside their own brackets on the end that connect them to the rails. It drove me nuts when they rattled.

There is no Bug Sheild; and it does'nt have a sunroof, but I have to check the roof rack, that might be it. The sound sounds as if air is comming in through the top left side of the widshield, sometimes it does sound like a rattle, but more often like air.

Maybe your driver's side window is not all the way up.

did you check the rubber seals along the windshield? i know there was a tsb for it but i never bother to take it in for it because it was minor.

Duct tape it.


Just to see where it's coming from. Or to fix it, if you're a big fan of Red Green. Aluminum speed-tape might be better in that case.

I Checked the roof rack and it seems to be tight. With the rubber seals along the windshield, how would I know that they are not sealing? I did notice that on the top of the windshield there is a rubber seal and then there is a open space and then there is the begining of the roof, is there suppose to be a seal in that open space, it might be 1/8 Inch wide but it is across the top of the windshield?

the rubber strip should start from the bottom of the windshield and travel at least past the top of the windshield to the roof rack. I know on mine at the very top of the windshield where the rubber strip bends toward the roof it tends to stick up a little.

I checked the seals again, and I found nothing, I cleaned the sides of the windsheild, and the sound went away. Today though I noticed that there was a sound again coming from a different place, this time the sound was made when I went over rough road, I narrowed it down to the center counsel where the sunglasses go, it seems to be the map light, but I am not sure. Has anyone experienced this sound before? And does anyone have a fix for it?

On my option-less SR5 the overhead console hooks into the headliner at the back edge, and snaps into sheet metal at the front. A good downward tug on the front will pull that console down if you think something behind it is making noise.

I still suggest duct taping it to see if it's coming from an opening, or turbulence over a gap or protrusion.
