Window Lights and Door Lights

I love my 4Runner...but I have a gripe. At night, there aren't lights to indicate where my door locks or window controls on the doors. Anyone else find this a little irritating? I also drive a VW Jetta and that thing has lights galore. You'll never be fumbling in the dark looking for the door locks or the window controls.

Yeah, I wish every switch were illuminated, especially the moonroof/homelink switches. I've been in a Jetta before and really like how everything is lit up, that's gotta be one of the reasons why VW/Audi is constantly being praised for its interior designs.

At least steering wheel controls are lit. I'm not too picky bout interior lights. You get used to controlls pretty quick, so finding them is just an instinct.

I thought the same thing, hate the fact that only one window switch is lit. even thought of adding accessory lights.

I wasn't happy about that either but I got used to it. You get used to where everything is. I think the most annoying is the mirror switch not being lit up. I don't get that upset because Lexus doesn't have the best interior lighting either. It has small dots for window switch lights.

Window switch wise, I am still getting used to the location. Passengers don't have a bloody clue where the switch are!

I agree on the lights, tho the dash is lit pretty well for the most part.

I see there are other Jetta owners here too? What years? I just sold off my '88...still have my 82 Cabriolet tho.

I have a 2001 Jetta GLX V6. That thing is fast! I previously owned an 89 Mustang v8 and comparably around 70 MPH I would say the Jetta is a lot smoother. I guess we are talking about 11 years of automotive innovation.

Yep I feel the same way, especially with the homelink, I'm always reaching around up there, trying to find the right button.

You might be able to put a SPDT switch in series with the ILE pin feeding the dome lights. Connect the switch pole to the ILE wire facing the lights. Connect one throw to the ILE wire facing the body ECU. Connect the other throw to ground. Assuming the dome lights are in DOOR mode, the switch will switch between ON/DOOR. To include the map lights in this behavior, you'd first need to modify them to run off the ILE circuit (see appropriate thread on this subject).

I think it would probably be a lot easier to light them from the front as opposed to backlighting. That would be cool and possible, but still pretty low on my list.

what i'm hoping is in an upcoming year they do make them backlit, and are compatible with our trucks, so we can just switch them out.

I was thinking about buying so small red LED's and drill small holes just
below the button(like the ones above) and hook them up so they are on
all the time, at least you could see where the little buttons are.

the glow in the dark tape is not a horrible idea, how about some mine led lights under the edge of the door panel on the keyed wire? let me ask you though, how many of us actually as drivers look down at the switch when we operate them?

Very good point.....never.....and I am still getting used to the location. Maybe for the passengers though.
