Window Smashed,Pistol Stolen! :ybrick:

Went to a halloween party at a business in downtown atlanta saturday night. Parked in the companies parking lot with all the other cars, and chose a spot by the main street under a street light.
Came out around midnight to find my back passenger door window smashed, my two backpacks that were in the cargo area on the ground, and the contents pulled out!
They ignored my external hard drive, my $150 surefire flashlight, my smith&wesson knife, and the spare set of keys. Only thing the crackhead thug took was my springfield armory XD-9 that i use for my conceal carry pistol that I didn't want to take into the business!:mad:
After filing a report, and currently having the window replaced as I type this post, i'm researching ways to secure my next pistol. I want a safe/vault, but I can't find one manufactured for the T4R!
I'm thinking about a microvault

But what I'd really like to do is fab a bedside gun safe that has front door access under the drivers seat.

not to be mean or anything but let this be a lesson to you and everyone on here like you. i have seen some posts on here where guys will mount a holster to their center consul or door and put their gun there while driving ect. its dumb! even if you take the weapon out when you leave the vehicle, you leave the signature of "hey i carry a weapon in my vehicle" to any wood be car prowlers(i know in your case you said it was in your backpack? but other wise out of sight, out of mind). i hope you realize the ramifications this could have on you. just cause you called the police and reported it stolen doesnt exonerate you from liability if that weapon is used in a crime or heaven for bid murder. the family or victim can still come after you as the negligent gun owner and file a wrongful death or other type suit against you. just an fyi. i have seen this kinda thing first hand, a concealed weapon is ment to be carried for your protection, not left unattended/secured in the back of your truck/car/suv.

this sucks i know, i had a pistol stolen from my at an international airport(i properly checked it in a locked safe/case i think it was the one you first linked, looks very similar) and when i arrived to my destination it was the only thing missing, they found the person responsible but never the weapon, he worked for tsa and had been stealing from luggage for some time.

yes i have installed a safe in all of my trucks for when ever i decide that i dont want to take my weapon with me(almost never happens). i went with the one you have in the second link, i chose that one cause i can put other things in it as well as the pistol, like money, wallet, spare keys, important papers/documents, you name it... its a nice size and they are almost impossible to break into or remove from the vehicle if mounted correctly. i have a couple of friends who have used the one i have as well and they like it as well as the one you first linked, the only problem with that one is it can not be hard mounted and is only secured by a cable, so it can fairly easily be removed from the vehicle.

good luck, did you have theft insurance? if so they should be able to cover the cost of the pistol and the broken window...
 
Sucks! Sorry this happened to you. No matter how you choose to set your things, it still doesn't give anyone the right to put their hands on your property.
 
basically, the only right way to do this is if you weld something into the truck its self or bolt straight through the body, i have never owned a truck that i wanted to carry a gun bad enough in that i was willing to hack it up for that....


on a side note, i always wanted to put one of these into my vw bus...spring loaded...read the last part of the ad, lol

Sorry this happened to ya, I'm not going to beat you up about it either. Find a good way to secure it in the future, especially if you have children. I've got to do something myself.
 
Seeing as how I had my 4runner broken into almost exactly a year ago today, I would be the last person to kick you when you're down, BUT...

Did you have anything on the outside of your 4runner that indicated there might be a firearm in there? Reason I ask is that when my 4runner was broken into at the light rail station last year, it was the only vehicle on the street that was broken into - none of the other vehicles around it were touched. And the theives rifled through every compartment but all they took was my POS stereo, my air compressor (MV1050) and the change in my ashtray. They ignored tools, the 3-cell maglite, heck, they even passed up the spare key that was in my center console (note: It's not there anymore!)

But my 4runner did have an NRA sticker on the back window and I'm absolutely convinced that my 4runner was targeted because they thought I might have a gun in there. FWIW, I didn't but you can bet that the NRA sticker was scraped off my window the next day.

Word to the wise - don't put anything in your 4runner you're not ready to lose. If you don't need the gun at the event, you're better off leaving it at home than leaving it in your car. I have a CCW, too, but I rarely carry, and this is one reason I don't.
 
I've used a small gun safe before but the issue that I have with them is that it screams GUN!! They are not easily concealed due to their size, in my experience, and they are a pain in the butt to use, I carry my gun or I hide the snot out of it, very rarely will I leave one in the car unattended. If I do it won't be in the usual places.

Sorry to hear someone jacked your gun, I feel your pain.

There was no sign of any weapon in the vehicle, it was tucked away in a backpack which was in the cargo area behind 10% privacy glass among another backpack with random camping gear, a camp chair, a blanket, and a bucket of bulbs waiting to be planted.
I carry my CCW 99% of the time, but not into a business that does not allow it, especially at a company party with alcohol involved.
This is not a case of whether or not I should carry a firearm, this is a case of I'm going to carry a firearm within the law, and I my experience has shown me that I need to beef up my security beyond stowing away and arming the factory security system. :gun6:

Full tint on three sides is a good idea too, you can't see into my truck during the day, let alone at night. If i do leave anything small and valuable in the truck, i put it under the front seats, that way someone has got to climb right in to search, not a smart move if you're a sneak thief.

i wasnt trying to bust your balls, i figured you knew everything i was saying already. i was merely saying what i said for the others who would read your post who do just carelessly carry a weapon and leave it where ever is convenient. you sound very much like a responsible firearm owner/handler.
again check with your insurance co, and see if they will cover the cost of a new weapon, i would hate to lose my XD :bigok: good luck man i hope the idiot gets caught

Funny story for this sad thread. I have a Tom Tom mounted in my windsheild. I'm at Walmart one morning and locked my truck. I come out 10-15 mins later and it's gone. I was extremely pissed because someone had been in MY 4runner. I called the police and reported it stolen. I went into to Walmart and asked if they could check video camera's. Needless to say they were no help. Anyways about a week later I'm cleaning out my truck using the shop-vac when I keep bumping something under my front seat. Guess what it was? That's right, my Tom Tom. I felt like the biggest idiot. It had apparently just lost suction and fell off my windshield. So for me personally I think under the front seat is the perfect place to hide things.

Sorry about the gun bro :(

I'm pretty sure spring loaded holsters are illegal in CA and NY at the minimum.

Sorry to hear about the break in. I hope you get your stuff back.

no worries man, I just took it a little personal, guess the anger stage is still kinda fresh. The insurance company said that items stolen out of a vehicle are handled under home owners insurance, which means a $500 deductible and a note on the record showing that a stolen firearm was claimed. considering the pistol was around the same as the deductible, i'll be paying out of pocket for the next one, plus the price of a choice method of securing it when needed.
 
You need one of these. Mount under the driver's seat. 10 ga steel. Bolt it to the floor, bolt through the floor support, and use carriage bolts and fender washers (round heads on the bottom). They'll need a huge crowbar to pry it loose (probably have to remove the seat to get enough leverage) and a torch to open it. Then they'll take your whole truck!
