Windshield on '07 4Runner cracked

Hi, newbie here. This is my first post.
Does anyone know if any problems have been reported with windshields?
A couple of small rocks hit my winshield and cracked it. Quite surprised that such a small impact could do so much damage!

Do a search and you'll see that the 4Runners are plagued with broken windshields. I think it has a lot to do with how vertical the shield is. My old Celica had a few hard hits with rocks, but never had a busted shield and I think it was attributed to the slanted shield that was part of the hatchback design.
 
Count your blessings, cause as an ex-FJ owner, the virtually vertically angled windshield was notorious for cracking with little force.
 
well, you'll get used to it. mine had a 3 feet long cracked after 4 weeks. and right after replaced with a new PPG windshield, another small rock chip.
 
I thought Toyota upgraded the "07's with a thicker glass on both the windshields and side windows to make the vehicle's interior quieter. Prehaps I am wrong!
 
yea, i heard that too.. but i guess thicker doesn't mean stronger..... it just made the interior a little more quieter.... i think there's something to do with the design or how the angle slant..
 
I have 2 cracks in my windshield, although luckily neither impairs vision so I am holding off replacing it until I get that 'mother of all cracks'.

First one I got in the passenger side corner from a stone. The crack luckily just went from one side of the corner to the other, about 2 inches on each side from the corner. After that one I got the hood deflector, which works well.

The second my wife got following a gravel truck too closely a few months ago. It is staying low in the windshield and not growing very much.
 
I'm about to replace my second windshield:(. I bought my 07 Sport V6 4WD on April 30th. On May 6th a rock hit the bottom right hand corner while driving home on the freeway, and was just a bullseye when I got home until the next morning when the crack started. Had it replaced shortly after that, then just a few weekends ago, BAM another rock on the freeway hit about 8 inches above the last impact. Talking to some of the glass replacement companies they too see an awful lot of 4runner business. If the crack didn't go into the molding I think it could be fixed before it got to long, but both times the crack went out of sight. No wonder my insurance company wouldn't let me replace with Toyota glass.

Speaking of Toyota glass, does anyone know what they treat thier glass with. The stock glass was crystal clear almost like it wasn't there, very little glare, and talk about repelling the elements, I've never seen anything like it. I notice that all of my other glass is still like that too, water just skims off like it's not touching it. That new windshield sucks, I treated it with RainX, and that helped a lot, but still not the same as the original glass.

What is the best replacement glass ? Toyota ? PPG ?

Digablekid, why did you get rid of your FJ ? I'm seeing them everywhere here and a few pretty tricked out.

if money is not a matter to me, i would choose toyota glass, but in reality, PPG is good enough for me. 1 OEM windshield equals to 2 PPG (with labor).

Way overpriced. I had mine replaced by Safelite for $500 and it was Toyota glass. State Farm took care of the bill with $0 deductible from me. My replacement glass says Lamipane instead of Temperlite like the other glass on my truck, but it still has the Toyota etching.
 
Yup, happened to my '07 3 months after I bought it.

Best advise I ever got was from my insurance claims adjuster. He told me to lower my comprehensive deductible on my policy to $50 from $500. Your premiums go up a bit it pays for itself when you're looking at replacing a windshield for $300-$500 a pop, especially here in Colorado where rocks are getting shelled at your car constantly in the winter months.

Now when I get a chip in my windshield, I actually hope they can't fix it so I can get a new windshield for $50. :)
 
Sounds like a stupid idea but i almost felt like clear bra-ing the lower half or the whole windsheild just to see if it helps any lol, i mean the clear bra is 8mils thick and is completely transparent so...hmmm might help.

holy crap!?!?! 1250 seems a rip-off. my buddy had his 98 supra replaced OEM toyota windshield was 750 only. 1250 is the cost itself or with labor installed?
 
sharp4runr: did you treat it, if so with what, or did it come that way? Do you know what it was treated with if it came that way?

Does anyone know what the factory Toyota glass is treated with?

lawwailok: It is a rip off IMO, I have no trust in the dealer service depts, and will not take my truck there even if it's warranty work. $1,250 total including dealer install. My glass deduct is $100 from my insurance company for OEM replacement glass such as ppg...from the typical glass replacement companies. My replacement glass was terrible until I treated it with RainX, but it still doesn't seem as good as the glass from the factory. That's why I'm trying to find out what they treat the glass with.
