Windshield wipers, please return to base

Turned my wiper switch on by accident today and when I turned the wipers off they just froze in place in the middle of the windshield, they did not auto-return to the parked position.

Bad motor/relay or bad switch?

I've never troubleshooted our system for wipers, but in general that type of failure is usually in the motor park system. Not the stalk/switch. Keep us posted!

my old matrix, my 4runner, and my fathers rav4 will all sometimes stop before they get to the bottom of the windshield. i always thought it was a toyota thing. but stopping in the middle is really messed up. that might actually be an issue.

on a side note. my 68 wipers will not stop at all, but thats a whole nother story.

I never removed a toyota wiper motor but a ford had some contact points inside the motor to tell the motor where the motor should stop to bring back the wipers to its base.

If your stalk had bad contacts may be that could be it. Do you have another stalk to check it? Try swapping a stalk first.

Do they still work at all now though?

They still work. I think the problem is the motor or the contacts in the motor as suggested, and here's why:

When used intermittently they park completely at the bottom.

No matter what mode they are working in, if I turn them off before mid sweep, they park in the middle of the windshield, but I turn them off after they've passed the midpoint of their sweet they will park at the bottom.

This JUST started happening to me a couple weeks ago. Very annoying. Well, maybe its been that way all summer... Southern California summer and all.

wiper module is in the motor, could probably clean contacts and have full function again. but putting a new motor on it is quicker.

I was just looking at the contacts today, kinda grimy in there. Might take a few q-tips and 91% isopropyl alcohol to the connections and see what happens.

Thanks!

Subscribed! Been having the same issue for awhile now. Even on intermittent, they stop abour 6" above their normal resting position.

Did that help at all? Dealing with this myself. Intermittent isn't always evenly spaced out, and they don't park all the way at the bottom in between sweeps. They go all the way down, then come up about an inch or two. They also freeze in the center if I turn the switch off.
