Winter Maintenance Thread......

Thought there might be others out tackling repairs and service in the cooler temps. I started the other day by doing the following:
1) set tire pressures (they were low!)
2) did annual oil/filter change (castrol syntec 10w-40, toyota filter)
3) changed trans fluid
4) flushed brake fluid
5) changed p/s fluid (M1 syn atf)
Gave the truck a good wash and cleaned out the interior(it was time). The restoration bug has hit me, as I've ordered new factory rear mudflaps to install. 20 years of use have taken their toll on the originals. Ordered new front brakes (rotors,pads), front seals, and gaskets to repack the front wheel bearings. Thought it was time after 40-50k. Next year I'll tackle the steering system(pump, inner/outer tie rod ends, idler assembly, etc..). Hope everyone is having a nice Holiday.

I always replace my coolant right before winter. You might want to consider doing the trans filter next time you change your ATF.
 
eh. with modern coolants, i don't change them yearly. good for 100K, anyway, at which point it's usually time for a timing belt/chain along with new water pump, so the coolant gets changed then.

i do oil changes on mileage, not time of year. same for transmission, x-fer case, and diffs.

i check my tire pressure (and adjust if necessary) on a weekly basis.

Totally agree. I just did the coolant(toyota long-life with distilled water) not long ago (9 months ago) when installing a new factory rad. There is a trans kit on the shelf in our garage. My plan is to use it next year and convert the trans fluid over to M1 syn ATF. The fluid in our trans is quite clean, as it's changed every year. Thanks.

So are you supposed to use toyota red in a 93 or is green fine?

I would use the Toyota Long Life Coolant. It's not terribly pricey, and the results, I think, are much better then standard green coolant (ie Prestone or the like). Over the years, Long Life coolant seems to really hang in there (acidic wise), whereas, the green really seems to go bad much faster along with increased calcification.

Ok so I went down to my dealer today to get a part for my spouses 4runner and I asked about 1 gallon of coolant and its $40 unmixed. How much is it for other people?

concurrent with using washer fluid that is good for below freezing make sure to change over to winter blades for the wipers. they do work better than summer blades in ice and snow.

autohausaz.com has the long life coolant for $27(no affiliation). I'm usually ordering a bunch of other stuff, so they usually ship for free. You might check around, there are a bunch of retailers that will carry it. Best of luck.

I can't get long life cheap our family friend is a local mechanic and owns his own shop but I know that toyota red is really the best. Thanks for the info
