Winter tire recommendations

Hi all. Recently purchased a 99 limited, the seller included snow tires. At the time i didn't quite understand aspect ratios so i figured that the 225/70/16 snows would be comparable in height to the 275/70/16s that were on the truck when i bought it. Turns out they are quite a bit smaller (2-3 inches in overall diameter). My question is, should i just leave the larger tires on over the winter?

Large tires: Michelin Defender LTX M/S 275/70/16
Smaller tires: Motomaster Total Terrain W/T 225/70/16

My best recommendation - sell the snow tires and simply buy another set. Then you’ll have the correct size and full tread depth.

He probably followed the door jam sticker. The ones made in Japan have a very small tire size listed, 225/70R16, something about a tax on import based on the size of the tire or something goofy like that.

Either that or it's actually a 2WD 4Runner that came with 15" wheels and tiny tires.

The door stickers mostly read 225/75-15... Yay for 29" tires!

I run cooper discover ATW and love them.. not a 100 % winter tire but winter rated all season. Has good thread pattern, siping and traction is good for the transitions between winter and spring.

The Falken Wildpeaks that I and several others on here are using have the 3 peak snowflake sever snow rating (or whatever the hell its called) and do very well in the snow. They are not a dedicated snow tire but for an all A/T tire, they do awesome. They are also very good off road and have great road manners.

Plus they are cheap....

Goodyear Duratrac's have done very well in the snow for me. I think I'm going on 5 or 6 years with them.

Yeah they're itty bitty. I took them off and will sell them and try to get a set of Wildpeaks in the same size at the LTXs

I also run tiny tires for winter
235/75/16 and I thought that they would get me better MPG's.. sadly, due to the change in gearing, going the same speed requires more RPM = worse off.

Whatever, my commute is short enough that the 11-13mpg won't bother me much.

I run Toyo R/Ts year round, they’ve never let me down. I am biased towards Toyo though, I’ve sold them for a good while haha

I have 4 235/85-16 studded snow tires from Cooper on my 94 Cummins. I feel I can climb up a tree with them.

I just installed a set of 4 Michelin Defender LTX M/S 275/70/16. I plan on using them all winter. Huge improvement over some burly, knobby, but slippery Coopers. I went through 2 sets of the Michelins on my Yukon, got about 7-=80k miles for each set. They worked great all year around, never felt the need for dedicated snow tires. I'm hoping the good results translate to my 4Runner this year.
