Winter tires handle better?

Ok. This is not going to make any sense. My set of winter tires are 265/65/17 Yokohama Geolandar I/t g072. And my all season tires are 265/60/18 Micheline Latitude tour HP. I recent swapped to my winter tires and it seems to handle better than my all season tires on the highway which does make any sense. The winter tires have a very aggressive tread pattern


When I drive my Micheline tires the is so much tramlining it can get tiring. With the winter tires almost none or hardly noticeable.

Next set of all season I have to get tires with less tramlining.

I also run the LTX MS2's during the summer months. They are really good highway tires with no tramlining, and they seem to help my Runner get 20mpg on average mixed driving. They are not aggressive for any kind of heavy offroading though. Retrospectively I have Continential Winterextremes for my winter tires and they also do not tramline at all either. It is odd how you would think some tire would be bad at this and turn out great.

My wife's 2012 Camry has some Michelins that follow the grooved concrete all over the place and almost makes me sea sick going down the freeway. But then I realize that the car gets 35MPG and I am alright to live with it.

Tire Tech Information - Tramlining: Coping with the Ruts in the Road


here's a good article and i see why my michelin tour hp would tramline based on this article. And also why my winter does not tramline.

The grooves put into pavement aren't well standardized so some tires just happen to tramline more than others depending on how the tire grooves line up with a particular road surface. As a group, tires with more uniform circumferential grooving will probably be more susceptible to occasional tramlining but also better at handling water. Everything comes with a tradeoff.

Reducing pressure might help some. If you're driving the same highways frequently, when the time comes to replace the Latitudes, you probably want to go to a different tire for no other reason than to get a different tread pattern that works better on the roads you drive frequently.

This comes from memory of reading <a href="http://www.toyota-4runner.org/general-discussions/110300-ask-tire-engineer.html" target="_blank">this</a> guy's stuff.

Winter tires generally have softer rubber compounds so that when the temperature decreases they don't turn into bricks. I ran a set of winter tires on an autocross car when ever I knew the parking lot was really choppy and falling apart...

in my case, they are the same width. I think it's the tread pattern on the snow tires, it does not follow the grooves on the road as much as my regular tires. Apparently an tires that increase performance and response will increase tramlining, so its a trade off i guess
