Terribly ignorant statement. Your 40k vehicle is worthless if the rubber that meets the road sucks, and the yoko's and bridgestones that come standard on the 4runner limited are pretty bad. Tires are one of the most important, if not the most important parts on your vehicle. I cant belive the amount of people i know that simply dont care about their tires, and think all tires are the same.

Finally some wisdom.

The main FACTOR when driving in hot weather or cold weather is ADHERENCE. Usually four season tires are good untill you hit +7Celcius and start deteriorating.

If you live in a place where it gets colder then 7Celcius then unfortunately, your stopping time will increase as well as your adherence meaning you are more likely to lose control, slip, skid, etc....Best way to describe it I suppose is as if your $40k truck will be riding on hockey pucks on ice....

Its your call...I paid 20k for my 2006 and first thing I did is get my set of winter tires.

Threw some Coopers LTZ 275 55 20 on the big rims. It's an 80% solution for a more aggressive tire on the snow with the 20's. No rubbing.

If I were to purchase a set of 17" rims and Tires from TireRack, do I need to have them install the TPS too? That's an Extra $350. What will happen if I do not? Will the TPS alarm go off continuously?

It isn't an alarm, just a light on your instrument cluster. When I go off road I air my tires down to 15 psi and learned to ignore the light - luckily ours just stay turned on instead of blinking like on the Tacoma. If you were to have the sensors put in your winter set I think you'd also need to have the system reset every time you swapped the tires/wheels.

I did not use the tpms on my winter wheels. The 'alarm' is just a light. It blinks for a few minutes, then stays on. It's pretty innocuous, and I just ignore it, no biggie. Certainly not worth the cost for 3 months/year IMO.

While it may be fashionable on the internet to lecture about winter tires, here in Buffalo NY where the snow flies WAYYY more people don't use them than do.

I've gotten through Buffalo NY winters with a 2WD Ford Ranger (with some sandbags in the back) and all seasons...

Just saying, the internet doesn't always reflect reality...

What are you basing this information off of? Its entirely possible that many people can't afford snow tires, and also that many people simply don't know better and/or don't care enough. I've witnessed a 2wd pickup truck with sand bags in the back struggle to get across a relatively flat, plowed parking lot. I guess it boils down to that I don't mind paying around $300-$400 per season to run snow tires on my vehicle. That is a small price to pay for a significant improvement in safety in my opinion.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I do not yet have "new post" privileges...

I have a new Limited with the 20x7 wheels and am weighing my options for winter tires. I think I had a lead on a set of 17x7 SR5 4Runner wheels... those should have the same wheel offset and brake clearance, right? It seems like all the 4Runners use the same brakes.

OK cool, thanks for the confirmation. (I'm planning on just sticking with the stock 265/70/17 tire size, since this is for snowy/icy roads in New Hampshire.)

Do you happen to know if the same lug nuts work for all the OEM wheel options?
