winter tires

I live in Toronto Canada,and i just bought a 2011 4runner,and i really want to know if i will require winter tires,for the first year? if so i'm looking at the good year nordic thank you

If you live in Toronto and have a 2011 runner and don't put winter tires on it.... I feel sorry for the runner if gets smashed

I live in Toronto as well and don't plan to put snow tires on. BUT, I don't really travel outside the city. If I did, I'd consider throwing a set on.

if you drive out of the city i'd say get a set of nokians.

or you could kill two birds with one stone and just get a set of duratracs or bfgs

I live in the GTA and do a lot of driving both in and out of the city and although I like winter tires in general I do not plan to use them on the 4runner . My wife has winter tires on her car but it's 2wd, smaller, lighter, etc. I really don't see any issue with all season tires on a big heavy vehicle, especially in Toronto here we really don't get much snow. Maybe out west where you are running on snow/ice 90% of the time

If anything do what jca recommended and get some more agressive all seasons, such as BFGs or Duratracs, that's what I plan to do.

Having said all that buying a set of winters isn't really much additional cost d/t reduced wear on your all seasons, the only real significant cost is the second set of rims, and if you go with steelies, they shouldn't be more than 60$/rim

I live in Mississauga and I think that stock tires are adequate for GTA. Last winter they got me through just fine, but of course winter tires are always better in winter. When I drove to Vermont last year for a skiing trip VSC beeped just once when I was climbing on slippery hill. But this year I bought Goodyear Duratracs because I want better winter and offroad performance. So I'd say go ahead and buy winter tires, but if you drive carefully and switch to 4hi when it's getting slippery you should be fine with stock tires. As long as you don't go off the streets.

For sure you'll get different opinion regarding the "need" of winter tires especially in GTA where our roads gets cleared almost right away.

I've used winter tires for sever years now and totally convinced on their shorter stopping distance attribute.

I've already purchased Nokian Hakkapiilitta R SUV US$890 from Buffalo,NY when US/CAN is at par. These tires are CAD$1200 last time I checked. Also got a set of SR5 take-off wheels from one of forum members for a good price. FJ steel wheels is $90 a piece from dealership.

Just wanted to share this info just in case you wanted to buy winter tires.

Have you never driven in Toronto during the winter? If not I suggest getting some snow tires. I wish I had them when I first moved to Canada in 2007. Canadians who visited me in Seattle said it never really snows that much in the Trenton-Belleville area. Yeah right, we got pounded after I arrived in Dec. I think I got stuck in the snow at least 5 times in my TSX. So you can guess what I ended up getting in 2008. Yep, snow tires and a snow blower : ]
