Winterizing

So, I just recently moved from a climate with mild winters (20s-40s occasionally in the teens) to a climate where it’s possible to go negative and hang in the teens and 20s for extended periods of time. It’s about 26 right now and i noticed Vana White sounds like she’s running a little rough (Vana is my 4RUNNER, she’s pretty).

Anyways I just hit 87k miles, i plan to do a transmission fluid and filter change (never done it on a runner before). That’s about all I have in mind so far. What else have y’all done?

Grease the prop shaft, make sure your 4wd system shift in and out of it's positions and drive. Mines been fine into the single and negative temps .

Change your motor oil on schedule and try to drive distances that will let it come to temp and drive off moisture build up in the motor.

I drive about 100 miles a day, so I don't worry about it, other than having a dry spell to change the motor oil when due.

Yea - Shops will try to sell a winterize regimen - but routine maintenance will do it

- make sure you have good tires for snow/ice
- Make sure you have good wipers
- Make sure fog lights are working
- check your antifreeze/ fluid levels
- Agree with using your 4WD and make sure youre driving distances to get your temperature up
Shops may look at your engine air filter, recommend engine/ injector cleaner
- Make sure your battery has enough charge/ has enough water in the cells
- Try to clean out the salt underneath when youre able

running rough? could be anything but check your plugs and your ignition coils. for me I found some dried coil boots. also fluid film your underbody to keep the rust away.

Check your windshield washer fluid. It comes in two versions, one good down to a little below freezing, for summer/warm climates, and the other version good down to -25F or -30F. You want the second kind. Look for the temperature rating on the jug.
