wiring for led ribbon

so, i bought 5 ft of oznium ribbon led's

they are the ones that can be cut!

i want to wire them so that i can turn them on whenever with a switch but also when the doors open.

I thought about wiring it to the dome light but i think thats a hassle, and ive heard its risky.

These are the options ive seen:

-add-a-circuit- (but idk what fuse to add it to)

-magnetic door switches(don't know where to find)

-just power it to a 12v source


HELP PLEASEE!!!!!

Aren't there a few open spots where new fuses can be added?

I will be interested to see what comes out of this thread. I've been trying to figure out how to do this for awhile.





Side note: They just announced Obama the winner. :upset:

thanks, I was just trying to find that post. This diagram i worked up will function exactly the way the OP described in the orginal question. It uses a Cole Hersee 3-way switch that fits exactly in the factory cutout. I will be doing this mod on my 4th gen. The switch will allow for a complete off position (center), door activation (down position) and on demand (up position). Good Luck,.

Here is the switch ino if you are really interested. I had purchased these switches a few years back and they have interchangeable lighted lenses that are quite nice.

I think your best bet is to get your 12V at the ignition switch (you find the wire you want with a voltmeter for always live or switched), add an inline fuse and for the ground, you could tap on the wire that comes from the driver door switch. I'm pretty sure the 4 doors use the same wire on the dome light so, no matter what door you open, these lights will work. If I'm wrong, somebody correct me.

If you want to add a manual switch, you will need to add a relay and some more wiring like in the diagram. IMO, not a good idea if your knowledge is limited in electricity.

I can try to explain the diagram:
Power comes from the battery, thru the fuse and goes at pin 85 and 30 of the relay. For the pin 86, it's that one you need to activate (with a manual switch or door switch) by giving it a ground. When 86 receives the ground, it pulls the switch built in the relay itself and gives power to the lights.

For the switch:
It's a three way, on for one side/off in the center/on on the other side.
For the first side, you make contact between pin one and two of the switch, giving a full ground to pin 86 of the relay, activating the rest of the circuit.
Center, no contact, no lights at all.
Other side of the switch, you make contact between pin two and three of the switch, making the lights on when you open the doors.
As for pin 4 of the switch, it's there for the bulbs built in the switch itself.

Might be a little complicated to under stand but this is the best I can do to help you guys.
 
my 4runner has been in the shop for the past two weeks because of the vandalism and the lousy shop that cant put together my sport hood because they broke the buldge, and a few fender clips so hopefully when i get it back later at the end of this week i can install all thats waiting here at home:


-the 5 ft of led ribbon
-new sparco pedals
-new cross drilled curved slotted rotors
-new lower ball joints
-new license plates
-paint calipers and clear coat on the trd emblems
-paint hitch and roof rack
- and put my 22's back on

:(
 
Man, at least you got stuff to do to your 4Runner... lol hopefully soon I'll have some new stuff. So boring ridin stock everything.. :(
