Wiring harness for 04 Limted

Im looking to install an aftermarket deck in my 4runner. I have an 04 limited, so it has the premium JBL setup (not the nav though). What wiring harness do I need to get? Ive seen them range in price from $6 to $80 and all the websites I tried have terrible, uninformative product descriptions.

Have you looked through the car-specific data at Crutchfield (www.crutchfield.com)?

They are often pricey when it comes to their products, but their harnesses and customer service "after the sale" are top notch.

I might would "shop" for your radio through them, based on your exact car model and replacement HU choice, and go all the way to the shopping cart. Once there, they usually show you the harnesses required/included to install that radio - including part numbers - though they include those harnesses for free when you buy the HU from them.

At least then you can get an idea on which and how many inter-connecting harnesses are required (usually 1 - but sometimes 2 when a truck-side harness and a radio-side harness, that then connect to each other, are both required).

Yeah I tried crutchfield.com and after I select my model car and stock radio options, it says there is nothing that matches my vehicle when i look under wiring harnesses

This is why I suggested that you try to "buy" the head unit you want there too. If you find the HU you want, add it to your cart - after you tell their system what your truck model is. Go to "checkout" and look at the additional harnesses that they've included on your invoice for free. Obviously, don't consumate the sale, just get to the checkout so you can see what harnesses they were going to send you if you did buy it from them. Each of these harnesses should have a hyperlink to them so you can look at photos of them and maybe even see some specs on them.

The wiring harnesses that they give you for free, are theirs, Crutchfield house-brand. I've never been able to pull up a stand-alone wiring harness there either, but they always have a house-brand type available. From that, you may better be able to figure out which type/kind it is that you'll need - since you said you found several, with a wide price range, out on the internet at large.

EDIT: I just went through their harnesses, and when I plug in my truck (08 T4R LE with Factory Nav) they show no in-dash receivers that are compatible and none of their Toyota harnesses (I found 2 out of the 103 they carry) said they were compatible. Sounds like you're going to need to call Crutchfield or some other radio supplier and talk to a live person - maybe they can deterime compatibility for you and recommend a specific harness or harnesses.

This is supposed to be the hot set-up for replacing the JBL H/U and retaining the rest of the JBL Synthesis system. I'm sure it will work on a 2003- 2007 system.http://sector29.com/PRODUCT_PAGES/37/37-MTRTYTO-01.html You will still need some adapter to retain the steering wheel controls. Hope this helps.

Yep, I ordered that exact cable/adapter. Should get here in the mail today. I already have my enitre dash torn up, the old radio removed, and the bluetooth mic & gps antenna & trim kit installed for the new head unit. I was originally hoping it would be the standard $10 wire harness but hey thats the price of having like 10 speakers

Great! So do you have the steering wheel controls or is that not a problem?

I didnt buy the steering wheel adapter or the ipod adapter yet. After the next paycheck and I take care of some bills Ill buy those 2 things and install them together. I know its not the most efficient way to do things but Ill have plenty of features to play with until then :biggrin2:
