Wiring harness question

I ordered a pair of light pods that came with a wiring harness. I ended up returning them for two pairs of light pods, and two wiring harnesses I bought separately. I've attached pictures of the two diagrams. The first harness I got makes sense: power and ground come from the battery to the relay, then out to the lights and the switch. The second harness I ordered doesn't seem right: power and ground go to the relay AND the switch, then a line from the switch to the relay, then from the relay to the light. I'm not exactly sure how the relay works, but it seems like power and ground shouldn't go directly to the switch AND the relay.

I'm not an electronics expert, and would appreciate any enlightenment.

Does the switch have a backlight in it? If there is a light in there it needs to get power from the battery. Do you know what that box is between the battery and the switch?

The box between the battery and the switch is a plug. I ordered a Toyota push button switch. The switch has a fourth wire that connects to the dash lights for the backlight.

Does there need to be a fuse between the battery and the switch?

Both diagrams are correct. The first one is simplistic, plug and play. The second is more technical both in install and operation.

If you blindly follow #2 to the T you will have functional lights
