Wiring Question on Radar

Hey All,
I searched for a few days on the different ways to do this, but none had the exact question I'm looking for so....

I am trying to hardwire my Escort Passport into my 4runnner, but am trying to decide on the wiring. I've done a few basic things before(car stereo, radar)but want to be sure I'm doing this right.

I bought the direct wire kit for the passport, which comes pre-wired to a 1/4" male spade plug and ground wire w/ lug.

My question is should I:

(1) Tap into an existing 12v wire near the fuse box area? If so, anybody have a favorite? It comes with a little 3M clamp-connector.

(2) Put the spade plug directly into the fusebox under the steering wheel? I've never used a spade plug, so I'm not even sure where to put it in the fusebox.... Do I need an add-a-circuit to do this? It seems like the spade should plug into the fusebox directly somewhere, but I can't figure out where exactly.

Thanks for the help and here's a picture of what it looks like if anybody needs it...

Tap into the black/red wire at the steering column, and out a 5A fuse inline. Then, ground the other side to chassis. Easy as pie. Good choice on the detector too!!

Sorry to get off-topic but i heard Passport was better than Valentine 1? i don't know but i use a cobra which it helped me alot. never got any ticket in my life *knock on wood*.

i'm not very familiar with hardwiring it. for me, i just ran my wires behind my center console. but this might help!

Thanks for the help, and the awesome write up. Just what I was looking for.

I wonder if the color of the wiring is similar in the 06? I'll have to find those wiring diagrams again.

Goodtimes posted them last year do a search.

I have a V1 as well, the easy install is to tap into the wires running into the mirror. They are switched with the key, so no work to tear anything apart. On my '06 Limited there are two wires entering the mirror, use a VOM to verify polarity, and sandwich the V1 wires into the connector. Something simaliar to this solution. http://www.invisicord.com/

Of course, the V1 is 12volts and the Passport is soemthing like 9V or 5V, so this would NOT work for those models.

As always, do this at your own risk. It worked for me, but I can't promise you won't burn yours up.

Assuming you have an electric mirror. Don't try to wire it into the sunroof because these circuits are not consistently hot (ECU controlled). An easy place is the back side of the sig lighter plug or the same place an electric mirror hooks up behind the drivers side kick panel.

Any pictures or colors of wire as to which one in the kick panel to tap? I was going to use the one under the cig lighter, but I think I'll use that for my sirius radio instead. I freakin lost the T-tap that came with the radar and all the places around me are out of them, so I'll have to wait until this weekend to do it now.

I believe the info I used came from;

There is also an additional connector by the sig lighter for adding a second 12v outlet when you add the ashtray module, another possible connection point.
