Yes, the V6 is also ordinary. 90% of the people will pick a less expensive, more efficient, less maintenance V6 over a V8 if they are both ordinary.
V8s have to "earn" their keep. The 4.7 doesn't.
Wish I bought a V8 sometimes :(

I had the v6. Wasn't happy with the transmission drone it made at very light throttle at 35/40 mph that all dealers i brought it to said was normal. Drove 3 other v6's at dealers to ensure I wasn't going crazy and they all did the same thing.
Found a v8 that was mint, absolutely loved it, and for $2500 did the upgrade. No brainer IMO. Absolutely love the v8!!!

I'm pretty sure they have the same transmission. So I guess you just might be crazy.

I have a V6 and I don't regret not getting the V8 one bit. I am glad the V6 comes in 2wd as in Southern California it is a big overkill to have an AWD vehicle.
My neighbor has a 2008 V8 4runner. He let me drive it alone one day. It did not blow me away. Actually both engines are super smooth. Lots of people on here are fanboys of the V8 and I could not tell a difference between the smoothness of the V8 vs the V6. Both are good solid engines. Actually my V6 was more smooth since the V8 had a loud drive shaft clunk every time I let my foot off the gas pedal.
The only reason I would get the V8 is if I tow.

Well I found this out today 70mph=1900rpm 75mph=2100rpm. That's pretty good considering I have 285.65.18s.
Tracked the vehicle via gps, in vehicle 70mph via gps=65mph via dash speedo.

What he said i kept the 7.3l F350 for towing everything, and dont plan on getting rid of it even though we have the 4runner now
the 6 speed tows like a beast and gets 19 unloaded 16.5mpg loaded heavy
I have driven both the v6 and v8 and I think that I would have been happy with a v6 also, since most of the towing is done with the f350
But it is nice to know I could throw a medium size toy hauler behind the v8 runner and have it perform well too.

Well said. That's what I have been saying over and over in this thread. The V8 is OK, just doesn't blow you away. And when you have an "OK" upgrade option that costs more to run, most people are going to say "no thanks" Except the fanbois I suppose haha

I don't consider myself a fan boy. I originally wanted a land cruiser fj80 that had the 4 liter 6. If that thing has no power, in a 4 runner, It should be better, a v8 must be great. So what sold me was the v8 since I drove that right after I drove a fj80 land cruiser lol. Come to find out later, anything would be better than the 6cyl land cruiser..... my uncle's 4cyl 97 4runner has more power!

I've learned in my life that the grass is always greener on the other side. There are things I like about the V6 and V8. My decision came down to opportunity knocking. Fuel is expensive, how much towing would you be doing? If it's not a lot and you do more commuting, you made the right choice. However, I'd never buy a V6 after driving my V8 for a couple of weeks, it's like owning a Porsche Turbo and switching to a 4S - still "good enough," but it'll leave you wanting more!

I came from a 360 hp Hemi and I don't notice a big difference in the v6 except maybe passing on the highway. It has a nice amount of torque and is super smooth. I don't tow so it made sense to me.

V6 vs v8 is always a big subject with many opinions. Really, no argument is wrong, but it really becomes a issue of preference or need. Both sound to be great engines

I've never seen the gas mileage advantage with the v6. Really is none.
And it's working its little heart out all the time just to keep up.
I'm almost ready to retire my 2005 V8 2wd Runner but cannot find anything I like as much (for less than $55K, and some of those are V6's) The new 4Runners are too ugly and with no V8 option they have been ruled out. Probably drive it for another year or two since it has already depreciated.
Of course my life with the inline 6 of 1990's Land Cruiser was not a good experience as to getting on and cruising the freeways...

When it comes to engines it's not.
I can't count how many times throughout the years that I've seen these, wish I had a V8 threads. Yet I've never seen one thread where a person says, I wish I had bought the lower HP / TQ V6 instead of the V8. Same way I've never seen someone with an I6/V6 say they wish they had a 4 cylinder.
