Yep, precisely why I hold back my opinion on these topics and really just read what all the Vets have to say. I've heard opinions on both sides of this issue from friends who have served, but civilians simply do not have the experience to back up any comments made with anything more than hot air.

Right. I hate it when people who haven't played in the NFL share their opinions about the NFL too. So annoying.

You should probably state your own military record if you are going to call others out. I heard you mentioned your wife serves. What branch were you in?
I disagree that this is a topic where only those who've served should be able to comment BUT I definitely think actually serving in the military provides great insight.
It is great to hear from combat soldiers, many in this thread on what their experience based opinions are as well as those looking in from the outside.
If you go down that train of thought then the only people who should be commenting are those who actually served in combat units. Getting Veterans opinions is a great thing but the overwhelming majority of US Service Members do no serve in Ground Combat units of any kind.

Yeah, well personally I think spouting bullsh*t opinions because "I'm the 12th man, dammit" is equally baseless. Die hard football fans suck to talk to, they can spout off all the stats in the world, but they wouldn't last ten seconds on the field. Sitting on your couch with a god's eye view doesn't make you an expert on anything that actually happens in the game.
I'm not making claims either way, just pointing out that while we all have a right to our opinions, they hold absolutely no weight if you haven't actually been there to experience it.
I should have clarified- combat vets. I realize that the armed forces are by and large a paper pushing bureaucracy, which is primarily why two of my friends who did serve in ground combat ultimately said they did not reinstate- its nearly impossible to get through the red tape in any branch and makes a lot of day-to-day routines an absolute nightmare.

I've not. I understand we have different perspectives but I'd rather try to not oversimplify and immediately dismiss a different one. That's what's annoying.

You don't have a clue how different our perspectives are. The fact of the matter is that most military members will dismiss your opinion when you have no expierence in something military related.
Can you please voice your opinion about deployments and their affects on family members too?

I agree. There are many service members who's comments are not worth reading. Likewise there are many non service members who's comments are beneficial to the discussion.
It is not all that different. There are many that never served that have an in depth knowledge of the military and how it works. Just because on wore a uniform does not make them subject matter expert. One who never served but read books/memoirs/historical documents/and studies history can be an expert as well, its just they have second hand knowledge rather than a first hand account.
No one asks you "Have you worked for Toyota" when you post about mods for your truck...
Discussion is healthy when opinions are varied.
Excellent comment. We both know that the majority of folks claiming to be GI Joe were in fact bean counters.
The larger issue I see from this discussion is the problem with the military shifting towards becoming more inclusive rather than exclusive. Elite units have been/and should stay exclusive. Combat units have been in the past and should remain exclusive.
In World War 2 the American Infantryman averaged 10 days of combat a year... In Vietnam the American Infantryman averaged 240 days of combat in a year...
If and when we enter another serious conflict. One which requires operational tempo to be more like Vietnam, we will not be able to afford to have novelty members in these "elite" or combat units. We have gotten comfortable fighting wars where we go out on a mission and return to your air conditioned quarters after patrol, work out in the gym, eat a hot fresh meal with dessert, play xbox, check facebook, go to sleep, and do it again the next day... If we go back to a conflict like Vietnam where Soldiers were patrolling for 30 days at a time living in the jungle out of their backpack with 2 days off in the rear to "refit" for a year straight, then we will have problems... And not just with women, many young men who have been pampered will also struggle...

I read the article. Thanks for sharing. Similar things have been said by teachers of low income students. The schools and teachers unions are constantly pushing back against higher test standards but there are a few teachers out there who have written about how damaging lower standards (expectations) are towards that demographic.
