Won't go into Overdrive!!!

I have a 94 4runner with a v6. On cold starts, (even after letting it warm up) it will not go into the high gear - (overdrive) running down the road. NOW if I run about 3 miles or so with the engine warm now -- I stop the 4runner take it out of gear turn the engine off for maybe 3 seconds, turn it back on and then the engine will go into the high gear (overdrive). There has to a sensor that has gone bad.!. It runs fine after I do that.
Anyone out there that can help?

When was the last time you checked you Tranny Fluid? When was the last time it was changed? How many miles are on your truck?
