Won't move forward without throttle!

I am having some issues with my 2001. When I first start the runner up and put it in drive to go forward it doesnt wanna move right away til I get on the throttle! Sometimes I have to get on the throttle a good bit for it to move forward and then once I get it moving it seems to be fine til I hit the brakes again (as I am doing this in my driveway testing it while its still cool). Then once I hit the brakes and stop and then try again to move forward it does it again (feels like the brakes are dragging or something) somtimes worse then others. Then ill back it up and I dont seem to have this issue in reverse when I hit the brakes! Once I get it out on the rd. it seems to be fine when its warmed up and I go a few miles. Doesnt seem to matter whether its hot or cold out! Dont think its an e-brake issue because I dont use it at all cause it started siezing up and would stick on so I quit using it about 3 years ago.

Also I took it the other day out on a back country dirt rd. and I put it in 4 LO and it seemed like everytime I went to start out from a stop the flashing traction control light would flash (which I know is normal) and it would really make some weird/nasty grinding noises sometimes at first (It does not make the grinding noise like that in 2 wheel drive) and I would really have to get on the throttle when starting out that way too then once im going its fine (Also feels like the brakes are hanging up or something). Which I am not really concerned about that that much cause I very rarely drive it in 4 low or go 4 wheeling! But I am kinda concerned as to why it is doing it in 2 wheel drive!

Now this all started a couple of months ago when it snowed here pretty good and I was out and about testing the new tires out on the rds in 4 wheel drive HI by my house. I decided to slide the runner on purpose going down a slight grade to test out and see how slippery the rds. were and once I got stopped I let the brakes off and it didnt wanna move until I gave it a good bit of gas and it still didnt wanna move with ease so I decided to stop again and put it in neutral and then back into drive and then it went with no problems!

Now I know this vehicle has the ABS, A-Trac, and all that other worthless to me anti skid control crap on it! Does anyone think that my problem is related to any of that stuff?? Is it something that I could just unplug lol?? Or is this something that I am gonna have to have the dealer look at??

I tried to do a search on this topic but couldnt really pinpoint the actual problem that I am having. They were all related to it being really cold outside to having somewhat similiar problems as to what I am having but mine does it in all temps hot or cold out!

Love this site and you guys always seem to help! Thanks in advance

Eric

Try adjusting your throttle cable and transmission kickdown cable on the throttle body. (Make them shorter, and tighter).

how many miles are on your rig? i also agree with the others on the trans fluid level, and you might want to check your front calipers as one of them might have seized on you

Your e-brake started seizing up a few years ago? And now it feels like your brakes are dragging? That's most likely your issue. I'd bet one of your wheel cylinders is seized in the back causing the rear brakes to lock up.

But, start with the easy stuff. Check the transmission fluid level first like everyone else has said. I'm betting this isn't your issue though only because you said it does it whether it's hot or cold. And that it does it after you've been driving a while too.

Keep us posted & good luck.

Well I would think if it was the E-brake hanging up it would be dragging all the time and it isn't! I quit using it about 3years ago and I have never had any dragging on the truck until now. Although I guess I could get under there and try pounding on those little levers to make sure their all the way in & that there is no dragging from the E-brake! Also Ill have to look into checking the wheel cylinders too! Is there an easy way of checking to see if your wheel cylinder is bad?? Never delt with that b4!

My Runner has 82,000 mi. on it and the PO had the tranny rebuilt at around 50K or so.
I don't know the reason why they had it rebuilt. I also have the code P0770 shift solenoid E I believe on! It has been on for about 2 years now. I took it to a tranny shop when it first came on about 2 years ago and they said it was either the shift solenoid or the torque converter going! But I refuse to pay like $1800 bucks to replace those when the thing is shifting & running fine! Also since I started throwing that code I took it on a few road trips down south from PA to SC approx. 600-1000mi. trip last summer and the truck ran great while that engine light was on and has been running great up until I did that stupid slide while testing the rds. out a few months ago lol. Ever since then I have noticed this happening every now and then and its not that bad to where I am really worried about it & to stop me from driving it! But there is definitely a problem somewhere thats gonna need to be delt with eventually I think!

I am gonna try and check the tranny fluid today! I haven't checked it since last summer I think! I find it kinda hard to believe that its a tranny issue because it feels like a brake dragging but I dunno! Cause sometimes when I am stopped on a hill it will do it and I would think that no matter what that the tranny would still let it drift forward while its on that hill! But then again now that I am thinking about it I think I did put it in N and I think it started moving hmmmmm! Also I have read about the symptoms on what the tranny will do when that particular shift solenoid fails and I don't think that what its doing now is one of those symptoms. Its still shifting great all the time!!

Maybe ill have to try and re-create that hill slide again on that same hill but well this time without the slide cause there is no ice now lol and this time ill try putting it in N if it does it again and see what it does. Also I have read on here somewhere to try and start out in low and shift through the gears manually! This person said that theirs didn't do it when they did that so I will try it with mine now! They said that theirs only does it in the cold weather though unlike mine!

Think I'm gonna go for a ride and check the tranny fluid now! Ill keep ya all posted!!

Thank you!

I wasn't saying it was the e-Brake hanging up. A seized wheel cylinder will cause the rear brake shoes to get held up in the drum. Easiest way to check would be to pull the rear tires, pull the drum off and look at the cylinders themselves.

The shift solenoid is about $200 or so and an easy DIY. The torque converter, not so much.

Where are you in PA? I live right outside Philly. Feel free to stop by and I'd be happy to help you out with it someday.

Oh ok I see. Well I checked em anyway and tried hammering in on those arms a lil bit. I dont really think they went in to much if any at all. That is how I would of used to get them to free up b4 I said the hell with it and decided to just not use the e-brake at all. Get under there with a hammer and a big screw driver.

Yeah next time I have the drum off ill have to look at the cylinders on it and maybe ill post some pics of em to see what you think. Not sure when Ill get around to this though..

I actually live in near Uniontown PA. I think thats a couple of hours away from Philly but I will definatley keep that in mind! Thank you..

Also check the rear drums for diff oil leaking past the seals into the drums. This will cause the shoes to stick to the drums.

Ok so as I backed her out of the garage everything appeared to be normal backing up and didnt have to give it much gas like usual and I backed all the way out to the end of the driveway. Then I put it in drive! (first without giving it gas at all to see what it would do) well it drifted forward approx. a foot and then stopped like I hit the brake! So I decided to tap on the gas a lil. I didnt have to push on the gas that much to get it to move it wasnt really that bad and then once it started moving while it was moving I shifted it to N (Still in driveway) and it drifted for approx. about 3 feet and stopped as it should like normal while in N! Ok so I played around for a bit in the drive way doing that back n fourth for a bit. It wasnt too bad today maybe because its warmer out today and in the 70's. Maybe it is a cold issue I dunno!

OK well anyway I decided to go and try and recreate that situation when I slid and it first started doing that on that same hill. Well I had no luck getting it to do that again on that same hill. It was running great actually and wasnt doing it at all!!! So I figured I would pull back in my driveway and try it again and it didnt do it at all pretty much. The truck is way too warmed up now!

So then I drove it about 5mi. down the rd. and went and did some shopping for my lunch for work tom. and I played around in that parking lot for a bit trying it out and seemed to be working fine and just had to give it a little bit of gas for it to move going forward (it would start to move like normal and then I would gas it just to get it to go a lil faster but didnt seem to be doing what it was in my driveway when I first started her).

Ok so I drove it back home and I figured I would check the tranny fluid after all that in my driveway.

Ok now I know you guys are gonna think im weird for doing this but I was bored and I did it anyway lol I actually took a few pics of what the level looked like on the dipstick for you all to see. Well to me it looks like it is too full (about maybe a 1/2 an inch past the hight level mark) and which I have known this since I had bought the vehicle but didnt really know how to drain it and well it was supposedly serviced right b4 I had bought it and I figured well if it were too full they probably would of drained it. But now that I think about it I know I was wrong to think that way and well I kinda left it like that for 3 years now! Do you think having too much tranny fluid would cause this issue?? Kinda weird it would just all of a sudden start doing it now after 3 years?? How hard is it to drain a little bit of fluid out??

Ok guys well here are some pictures of the dipstick level and figured well I might as well take a few other pics of the truck for you guys to see. Shes nothing out of the ordinary but I like her!! shes pretty dirty though ugh! Now to get em on here hmmm!

PLease read what I wrote on the pics! It tells you where I saw the level at when I took the pics. I know its very hard to tell in some of em where its at..

Thanks

When you check the level, you're supposed to slowly row through all the gears in the tranny, then on level ground, put the truck in P or N, pull the dipstick, wipe it clean with some shop towel or a rag, and then put it back in the tube, and pull it out and check the reading. If you've done all of this and that's where the fluid level is, it's way too full.

I would drain the fluid from the tranny pan, and fill it back to the proper level, and see how things work after that.

Sounds like a leaking rear axel perhaps?

Look at the rear axel where the brakes and hub mount to the axel. Is there oil and dirt there. My leaking axel seal was so bad my rear tires actually skided around a corner. Also, same as you, reverse was not an issue, just forward after it sat for a few hours.

The rear brake pads can get soaked in gear oil and it actually acts like glue on the drum.

PS that tranny fliud color looks great, however, it may be a little full. I don't have mine over the top notch in HOT. As others have said. This tranny is sensitive to fluid level.

Do you have to pull the drums to be able to see the axle leaking? I looked underneath and I dont think I see any signs without taking the drums off..

Sounds familiar.
