Wood Grain Dash Kit

I was looking on eBay and I found some pretty inexpensive wood grain dash kits. One of them is some type of vinyl and is around $40. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...tem=7975194938&category=33705&sspagename=WDVW

They all look pretty nice in the pics and they all attach by adhesive on the back of them. I was wondering if any of you have experience with these. I do not want to get it if its not gonna look good and I am worried that if I were to take it off, it would mess up my interior, although they claim it won't.

What do you guys think?

I purchased my kit from Jason Burtman and am very happy with it. I have a Limited so a concern was color match. The kits color match was right on and the fit was awsome.

Follow Jason's instructions and with a little patience you will have no problems. Remember the patience part.

My only other suggestion is to spend the cash and get a good kit...you will be looking at it a lot and if you get a cheap kit you will be sorry every time you look at it.

quick question about it, i have an SR5 with the black plastic dash, does the woodgrain one go over it or do you take the plastic one off first?
 
I will say you get what you pay for with these things. The kits on ebay are over my kits cost ME! You might not be able to tell in pics, but in person is where you can see where corners are cut, aren't straight, etc. I can go into much more detail about this if you email me and show you examples. I do stand behind them 100% which most don't do and you are stuck with a so/so dash.

Here is my current interior. You can also go with carbon, or alum now.

I'm very interested in one of those kits. Im just curious does it include the steering wheel part and how much do they cost??

Unfortunately, it doesn't come with the wheel portion. BUT, it will match the dash kit!

did your 4runner already have a kit on it (like the limited)? I have the same problem as the guy with all the fading. I'm just unclear about whether or not you actually have to remove the old nasty wood (how do you do that) or just put the kit over it. Also, would you be able to see the old stuff underneath. Thanks in advance.

Mine is a limited and came with molded stock pieces, and the kit I added matches it and is an add on.

I'm assuming you have a SR5. Yes, the same color can be had as you saw in my picture. If you have a SR5, I can guess that you do because the Toyota "Sr5" dash kit fades/cracks/peels/yellows only after a few years. You would remove your old kit first, heat up pieces, get some fishing line or dental floss to get the edges up and pull. It's not hard at all. Then you replace he kit with one I can get you, which has a lifetime warranty and will not crack or fade!

thanks, yours looks great I definitely want to get this project done. I wasn't sure what exactly your kit included since your website says that it is not a replacement kit but just goes along with your existing wood. Also, some other kits I called on were flat and not designed to replace the stock stuff but rather attach to the top of it. I am very disappointed in the way the wood has faded and delaminated on an otherwise great vehicle.
Anyway, what kit should I order?

You are looking at the wrong kit. Use "Search by Vehicle" on the website to find the kit for your SR5. All the info and more will be there. I think they will be on page [3].

I can't wait to get the Burtman kit. I have looked around and it is the best looking and most durable (cant beat a lifetime warranty). I am going to be ordering soon.
 
Has anyone successfully removed the dealer installed wood grain kit?? I've just sold my '93 and purchased a '96......the dealer installed kit has faded and looks like crap!
 
Yes, I done these for a few people. The dealer kits somehow self destruct after a few years.

To remove, it would hellp to heat up the pieces with a hairdryer before you pull. This will make them less brittle when you pull them off. Take your time when prying it off. There will be some adheasive residue that comes off easily if you rub it with your thumb. It will probably take you about an hour to remove the old kit. You just have to be very careful and remove small sections at a time. You can also use 3m adhesive cleaner.

It will not affect the Oak or Gray areas, but does dissolve the black color, so you have to be careful to only apply it to areas you know you will recover with a new trim. Then you want to go over everything with the isoproply alcohol. Then put on the new adheasive promoter included in the new dash kit.

I do not intend to recover the dash trim once the overlay is removed. I've used the 3m adhesive remover before.....I figured that and a heat gun would indeed allow me to peel the stuff. My question is will the condition of the plastic after the adhesive is removed be acceptable? The door switches, vents & cup holders are going to be tough! You mention the 3m stuff will not harm the oak or grey, but will remove black.....I assume that's the dash you're speaking of...not the trim?

Yes, the stock dash.

Well, it may be discolored when you remove the kit. Toyota use a primer they wipe on the dash before they install the stock dash kits. The kits I have don't require this, and it's that primer that can discolor the dash and you might see this after you remove it.

No....going with basic black.

Sounds like I'm going to be scouring the country for dash trim from junk yards.
