Work estimates driving me crazy

Been using this site for a while although I just registered. I must say the informative posts have been extremely helpful. From simple antenna issues to brakes etc I have been able to find most of what I searched for and
I have learned alot. What I can not find and hope I am not just missing, is there anywhere on the site that people give recommendations for mechanics in their area? I have been getting quotes for timing belt/water pump replacements for my 2000 Limited ranging from $950.00 to $1327.00. I am OK with people making a fair profit, but these numbers seem high compared to what I have seen in other posts. Unfortunately I am not one to tackle this job on my own. I live in Northern Virginia. Thanks.

Where these quotes at independent shops or from the dealer? My dealer charged me like 650 for TB and WP.

Well, first, region matters.

Where in N. VA? D.C close V.A.? That has something to do with it. This is one of the single most expensive areas to live in the country. Cost of living is far higher and as a result, everything is more expensive.

The dealership will likely be charging similar to other official dealerships. Market usually sets the price. Gas, electricity, parts... labor.. everything here is higher, so you are going to pay more.


Just the reality. I am from TN, and I can drive my truck to Chattanooga (home town) and have the local toyota dealership do the work for almost 50% less. Fact of living in N. VA....

These quotes are from independent shops. 3 so far. Am checking with dealers over the weekend. I am in Fairfax, and I agree alot of things costs more around here. My house would costs a fraction of what I paid in other areas. I know I am reaching, but was just hoping I may find something out there to save me some bucks.

You are living in the some of the priciest real estate in the county. The dealers around Alexandria and Fairfax will quote ya around $1250 to start, and that is just for the TB/H20 pump. Pray you don't fall victim to the rear axle seal leak. That costs close to $1700.

I think some Toy dealer off the 301 past Queenstown was doing them for $850; at least they were early this year when my friend got his Sequoia TB change there. It may have been a special the dealer was offering.
