Generally speaking, I'm happy with my '13 Limited for all the reasons I bought it. And yes, in my opinion it's underpowered and yes, the gas mileage sucks, but I knew that going in- no surprises there.
BUT... WTF were they thinking when they designed the rear cargo area so that it SLANTS DOWN TOWARD THE TAILGATE?!?!?!?!?
It's an automatic EJECTION design that launches any round glass jar or bottle (think expensive bottle of wine, liquor, etc.) out onto the concrete instantly as you open the tailgate!! STUPIDEST DEISGN ERROR IN THE HISTORY OF AUTOMOBILES!
The cargo net doesn't help because the stuff just rolls UNDER the net and out onto the ground. HOW HARD would it have been to make the cargo floor level, or slanting 1 degree forward, or even to put a 3/8" lip along the rear edge? My 4-year-old grand daughter could have foreseen this problem and solved it.
In this world of "plastic bags" groceries just flop and flail around back there and half the stuff that started out in the bag at the store ends up rolling around in the cargo area by the time you get home.
You open the tail gate (which obscures your vision and your reach) and then SMASH! Glass bottles roll out and shatter on the garage floor and now not only are you out the cost of the item, but you're going to spend the next 15 minutes cleaning up food/beverage and hunting down 10,000 glass shards that have exploded up to 15' away! Oh, and you get to get whatever smashed off of your shoes and the shoes of anyone standing nearby too. ARGH! :redbrick:
I'm curious if this is a "Special Feature" of 4Runners with 3rd row seats, or is common to 2-row seat models as well.
The ONLY solution I've found so far is to roll down the window, lean forward and crane your neck around to evaluate what's in the "Ejection Seat" before you open the tailgate You should NOT have to do that! STUPID! STUPID! STUPID!
Anybody else have any better ideas?
