Worst place T4R factory GPS has put you?

I recently took a road trip to the north Atlanta GA area. 2016 T4R trail prem, late 2016 map microsd.

I got routed to turn onto an unpaved dirt path that was roadblocked probably 10 years ago, trees growing where the unpaved road once was. This was within the city limits of a suburb.

Luckily it was daytime.

My factory GPS in my 2016 gets me exactly where I need to go every single time without issue.

I have had many gps devices over the years that show the car flying through a field when driving on a newly opened stretch of road. Never had GPS try to put me on a long-closed road.

Years ago i lived on a corner in nashville tn. Most map databases such as googlemaps showed it as a T intersection with a bridge going over the creek, but there were steel barricades on both sides and the planned bridge was never built.

I saw a lot of cars and even a few ambulances come to a screeching halt there.

GPS is not perfect and was never designed to be. Watch your surroundings, read a map, do whatever you have to do but don't take GPS as the end all be all. It'll get you in the general vicinity but may not get you right to your destinations door step and that's ok with me.

In my experience paper maps become outdated faster than gps maps.

My factory GPS in my 2016 gets me exactly where I need to go every single time without issue.

Ditto this with my 2011 OEM factory NAV. - Pre-entune version.

Although I do have a handheld Garmin Rino that tried to route my Dad through a gravel pit, out the other side access road and across what would be considered a cattle trail, just to get to another minor highway no bigger than the highway he was already on.

When off-roading the GPS is useless, completely useless. Which I suppose it should be? Not really sure, but it's sent me down some roads that either hadn't been used in years, similar to your situation, or like my last experience, sent me down a road that did exist, but was on a sheer cliff, with the road being just wide enough for the 4Runner to go down (not that I exactly hated it, I'm down for the adventure, but would have been nice to have a warning). Other than that I've had other random areas where there was a "road," but clearly there wasn't as it was a fully grown meadow, etc.

Since then I haven't bothered to use it. I like Google Maps much more, and when off-roading I trust GAIA over everything. Granted you still will run across closed roads due to natural things like washouts, fallen trees, or gates being closed due to restoration/other things.

Hmmm...

Never had an issue in my Toyota has long as kept the map chip current and updated.

Now in my old Jeep GC, had fun with that. One time it took a Forest Service road that was barely two wheel tracks in the forest. Surprised when it did work and we arrived at our destination of the Sunset Crater Volcano NM. This was back in 2002. Road was since closed off during the Obama years. Tried taking it again in 2015 and it was closed.

Not a 4runner, but in 2008 I was driving cross country, trying to find a Motel 6 near Little Rock. My TomTom took me off the interstate, made several turns, and finally dead-ended in a cornfield. I was informed , “You have reached your destination.”. Not.

Yeah fun times trying to explain to the MP's why I was trying to get on base, to drive through it to get to my hotel.....:redbrick:

Correct. I was in a town at a home address on a paved road. I used 4runner GPS to get there from a Holiday Inn Express, also located in the same town on a paved road. Using the same nav system for the return, it suggested a different route, and a small portion of that route was a blocked off, unpaved, heavily wooded plot of land that obviously had not been traveled by auto traffic for years judging by the size of the trees.

The gps knew exactly where i was but had two bad pieces of data:

1) that the “road” in question was open and traversable
2) that it was the preferable road to the divided 4-lane blvd that ran parallel about two blocks away

I was inside a town, not yosemite

I noticed my gps sometimes will take me a different longer route. But thats when I don't pick the correct route I think your gps wants you to take it off roading. lol haha

This is probably the correct explanation. I havent had it off pavement for more than 10 miles. Odo turned over 12k. I have had it since oct 2016 so almost 2 years, about 6k of those miles were family roadtrips, the rest commuting.

It put me in a place where I had to spend $800 on an aftermarket stereo with android auto to maintain my sanity.

I’ve experienced a few errors with mine during my travels but nothing too extreme. Over the years, I’ve also used google maps, Apple maps, Waze and multiple stand alone Garmin GPS. I’ve experienced just as many errors on all those as well so, overall, I don’t find it to be too bad at all. It’s done a decent job re routing me around traffic and I like that I can display gas stations and Dunkin’ Donuts locations along my route.
