Well, these pics are from when my buddy owned my 4Runner before me... Needless to say not after this. Limited experience and not taking my advice did this; and landed me my baby!

$500, a new ECU, starter, and a good bath and I had myself a nice 2nd Gen!

My buddy's '88...testing out the new snorkle.
It did fine, but the TPS was not sealed properly, so the engine died. It was doing fine up till then.
Notice the new water level guage just behind the door, just so he knows exactly how deep it is submerged.

Was about my 3rd time wheeling my 5th gen. Didn't think it was that deep, about 4 months earlier, we saw 2 wranglers get stuck in there. We also noticed the water level went down in most of the pools, but boy was I wrong lol. Took my buddies 3rd gen and this random isuzu to pull it out as you can see. The front was actually sinking, I was about 4 inches away from destroying my engine. The front and back carpet were all flooded. But after pulling the carpet, shampoo and steam, it was brand new!

Hi everyone.

I've been a member for years but literally only made one post till today so here's one.

First time out wheeling with my 4Runner. Had just put the Nitto Terra Grapplers on and headed out with some buddies to the Red River Gorge/Slade area in KY.

Things went pretty smoothly since it hadn't rained down there in a while. Then we came on this mud puddle, me being the idiot that I am volunteered to try and go through the middle of it.

I didn't make it.

The engine bay will never be clean again.

Never been stuck in snow, rocks, or mud. Waters been my only enemy...
This was last year, They opened the dam after I crossed and this was only way out. Fried my computer and had to drain gas tank and all other fluids to get rid of water


I sank it again about a month ago at fordyce trail, no pics from that tho, Had 5000 miles on the engine and waterlocked it and blew a piston out the side of the block...left it on the trail for 3 days then it took 12 hours to get it off the trail and 20 hours to swap the engine

Top of my grill currently is 4ft, in that picture I had a 2inch body lift so water was about 4ft 2inches haha

Got stuck twice. My buddys jeep pulled me out the first time. The second time took two jeeps lol. A little water was on the pasenger floor board, but was about it. It was the first time I took it out I was very proud. I kept up with my buddies 4in. lifted jeep with no problems.

I've got a couple stories, no pictures though.

Back in the summer of 09, I was driving on an old logging road near the edge of nowhere. I came to a spot on the road that looked like it could have been trouble. I looked at it (without getting out of the truck, clearly a misjudgement) and decided that it was obvious that there had been mud in that spot in the spring, but it appeared to have been long dried up.
The trouble section was only about 2 feet long, so I didn't figure it could really be a problem. To be safe, I put it in 4wd drive and slowly creeped up. Everything was going fine until my front end was in the middle of the bad section when the front of the truck just dropped about a foot. I immediately realized I was in trouble, I put it in 4 low and in reverse and stepped on the gas.
Nothing, not even a budge.
I got out of the truck and realized the "bad" section was actually an underground stream with a clay top. The top foot of the clay had dried and hardened which is why it appeared to be solid. When the weight of the truck got on it, it gave way and I was now hung up on the frame with front wheels spinning in a clay/water/mud mix.
So at this point I had broken most of the cardinal rules of 4 wheeling: it was just me and my dog, I had NO recovery gear except a shovel. I was however in very good shape (my plan was to go on a 10 - 20 km hike in the woods) and had enough hiking/camping gear to be self sufficient for several days.
I spent the next 2 hours digging before I resigned myself that I was not getting out on my own. I walked back down the road I had come up and after 10 km came to some cottages. I knocked on the door of a cottage with a Tacoma parked in the driveway, it turned out to be the guy who's land I was stuck on! He was really nice and pulled me out, I gave him 20$ for gas (he wouldn't take any more) and he said he didn't mind me being out on his land, but he obviously wasn't excited about pulling me out.
A side note, is that the truck still has red mud/clay stains from that day, the clay stuck to EVERYTHING including my dog

Anyway I've got another story I may post later, I didn't get stuck but it was one mishap after another that could have ended a lot worse than it did.

As soon as we got the 4Runner, my husband and I were itching to take it off the road to try out the 4wd system and get it a little muddy. What we did was get it very stuck in mud.

Bellied out and it still had the dealer plates. And for the record, that ugly mug walking around the truck is not my husband. LOL And that tow rope was just a joke, not the tow strap actually used to get us out. I think you can get those at wal-mart, and they're rated for, like, 500 lbs.

One of my husband's buddies from work drove out to where we were and pulled us out with some effort and a really big truck. The tow strap snapped in half, and I thought we were stuck for good, but they tied it back together in a knot and got us right out.

A few days later, we got stuck in the exact same hole. Brilliant, really. My husband had one of those 'I just can't resist not trying to conquer that mudhole until I reach the other side' moments. At least he got it further across the second time before that evil Eastern NC mud sucked Calypso [our 4Runner] in. :bash: Mud is bad news for our 4Runner. We'll stick to snow bogging and rock climbing from now on.

looks fun! but be safe! thats a scary story of you guys using those 500lbs rated tow straps. once those snap they fly and can damage. i dont think the 500lbs rated straps have metal hooks on them but if they snap..the hook becomes a flying projectile.

Ohhh, no, see the 500lbs test rope in that pic is a joke. None of us tried to tow anything with it. My husband just pretended he was going to drag us out with that. It was there before we got there. People are always getting stuck in that hole. The strap our buddy used to get us out did snap in half, but that was because it was older. I don't know what it was rated for, but this guy knows off-roading so it must have been rated at -least- 20,000lbs.

4th Gens and 4runner in general are much much more capable machines than they're rated..maybe try and lift yours, get rid of the running boards and get some aggressive All Terrain's or best in Mud Terrain's....go back to that same mud pit and see who wins this time.

I'll bet you'll have a better view of your truck and the obstacles it can overcome.....You have a 4Runner!

Yep.... I have been very pleasantly surprised at what my Runner has done, from rocks, to mud, thru water, to climbs she never let me down...

Well done on the 2nd vid, what tires do u have on er now? how much lift did u get with the toytech lift?

Thanks! I got 3" on the suspension, 1" on the body and 1" from the tire. So the Fenders sit 5" higher than it did stock.

My worst stuck story.. Too long lets just say but it involved deep creek ( and it was pretty deep that day) I tried to cross the river. got stuck. filled the inside of my runner up with water to the bottom of the front seats. it kept running, I winched out off a jeep (ripped his bumper almost completely off
