That is indeed the 1st gen S/C.

7k seems pretty steep for a '98 with 150k on it, but then again, it's up here in the pricey NW.
 
I think the only main difference is that the 2nd gen is made from a single piece whereas the 1st gen is made from two (or more?). Mechanically they work the exact same.
 
Its worth what your willing to pay, its a pretty rare car though, 5 speed e locker and supercharger, seems to be in good shape. I would say go for it.
 
Not sure if it has the locker yet, but I could always retrofit one later if it doesn't. It does seem to be well taken care of, for sure. I would already be on my way there if it wasn't for my job. It's over in about a month, and I need to be sure I have another one lined up before I buy a car... Meh.

I read a bit on the SC, and it seems that the only difference is the single casting vs bolt together thing. I think the first gens get mounted upside down or something too(??) and are a bit more annoying to service, but that's not a huge deal.
 
Update: got an email back, no locker :(

Still thinking about it seriously though, the locker isn't a deal breaker for me. I suppose I'll see what the job situation looks like in the next month or so while
I continue shopping. If I don't find the 5spd locker 99 highlander holy grail, this is the one I want.
 
Solid examples of 3rd gens aren't getting more common so the price is pretty reasonable especially with the extras;if it was a '99 it would go for a tad more.

IMO it's all about past maintenance and care. I offroad my 4Runner fairly and have 167,210k on mine as it sits and it's been quite reliable and I take really good care of it and my truck is very solid. I have every record of anything that's been done to my truck and I it's rust-free so I think mine would be an easy sell in the $7500 range regardless of some of it's nics and the love you can see from being off road and being a Highlander model with locker makes it easier to sell to the Toyota crowd;now if mine just had a 5 speed.

$7000 would be a good price if well maintained and some semblence of records and minimal rust underneath.
 
Someone has definitely put some car into that 4runner. My first item of inspection is always the brake fluid and that has been changed. It looks like the valve covers are clean also.

I could see that one selling easily for $6300 cash.
 
Honestly......around here he'll get what he is asking. They're always on CL with less features and branded titles for $6K.
 
Even with 4Runners all over Colorado alot of them are not being sold so that price would hold here too for a clean example.
