Worth buying a bald tire for a spare??

Hey so i have been looking at getting a full size spare for a while (285/75/16) and i came across one for 40 bucks on craigslist. Its a BFG mud terrain, i am running agressive A/T (pro comps). Will these tires.. jive if i get myself into trouble.. and is it not worth while having a spare showing the wear bars? thanks!

It's better than nothing if it's free, but even the cost of mounting it makes using a bald tire as a spare a bad idea. I certainly wouldn't PAY for a bald tire, you can find a tire with tread for less if you look around long enough.

I have given away better tires than that ... I would keep an eye on craigslist for a better or cheaper tire. Even if you have to pay a bit more for a good tire, It would probably be worth it.

lol i know it seems stupid but dont ask me why.. in my region tires do not come free. I have been on the prowl for 4 months and itll cost me on average 100-120 bucks for a used one from a tire shop. Its tough to come across 285/75/16's

Wow!! If that's the case, post a "Wanted" ad, and get one of the members here with the same size to either meet you across the border or ship one they will not need.

as long as you are open diff you should not need a "full size" spare. you could get away with a 265 or similar tire, as long as its close. just dont drive on it for 6months like that. but to get you home or to a shop that can fix/patch the hole in your regular tire, it will be fine.

I went to my Discount Tire store and they let me pick through some of the used tires piled up in the shop.

I found a nice 265/75/16 Michelin LTX A/T 2 with decent tread for $15.00 mounted. My old 265/70 spare was 10 years old and dry rotted to H3LL - had to replace it.

I found my last 2 spares in my buddies back yard. Bald and slightly cracked, but hey its the right size, Its somewhat round and it somewhat holds air. Perfect.
