Worth fixing? (Rust)

Hey guys, take a look at these pics and tell me, do y'all think this rust is worth fixing/coating or should I sell this thing and try to find one with less rust?

It's in otherwise great condition, just real rusty where the previous owner didnt wash it and kept it outside.

Also, are there any shops that would clean and coat it for me at a reasonable price? I don't currently have the tools for the job.

It looks fixable some parts need replacing driveline rear axel needs some major work but other then that it should be easy to fix just time consuming.

First thing. Damn I love living in California... Now to the point. That's easily fixable. I'd go to harbor freight and buy a cheap grinder and a couple wire wheels. Also naval jelly. Lots and lots of naval jelly. (not jelly in your belly button)

Yeah, that's pretty close to what mine looked like when I bought it, it can be fixed.

If you have a compressor, then first get a pneumatic needle scaler, it will fly through the rust much faster than the grinder for the corners and joints and such. You can get one for cheap from HF.

Though I still wonder how much it'd cost to have all the work done by a shop. Dont really have the time to do it myself or I probably would. Anybody on here had it done professionally?

If you can't do it yourself you could buy the tools to do get it done, then pay somebody else to do it - mobile mechanic from craigslist or something similar. Then at least you'll still have the tools left when the rust comes back.

It's not hard - get some beer and music, eye protection, respirator and get comfortable on your back.

Certainly not worth selling over that IMO. Not too bad of a job really. Mine was pretty much like that when I got it. If u really dont wanna do the work...put a neighborhood kid under there with a wire brush. Worse comes to worse....soak it down with some spray on rust converter and then paint it or undercoating.

i am thinking it is going to take hours of work with the right tools and a shop is going to charge and arm and a leg, more then $2000 is what i am thinking. it would be worth doing yourself, maybe you can get some friends to help to make it go faster.

I don't think a shop will touch that. Shops replace things, they don't clean up your rust. If you don't want to do it, then you'll just have to live with the rust.

Yeah that's pretty much what I've been hearing.

Has anyone tried media blasting? Friend of mine said that's what he'd do. Might save some time and since my driveway is gravel I wouldn't have to worry about
getting media everywhere lol.

get yourself a wire brush, rustoleum, air blaster, good mask and few spray rubber cans.... and get on the job:boxing:... its fixable

mine was worst , took the rear diff out and had it sand blasted . then sanded everything and covered with por-15 .

anything can be fixed , it just comes down to how much work you want to put in to fix it .

Mine looks somewhat of the same as yours. I just recently bought mine without taking enough time to look underneath. I Looked at the Rear Lower Control arm and saw that it was solid. Thought that was good enough. Im Thinking of doing the wire wheel, a pneumatic needle scaler, and maybe the Naval Jelly. The Drive shafts are also pretty rusty, im able just use the Wire wheel on them right? Then the front suspension I cant really tell what is worth saving. Not sure if I should take everything apart and Wire wheel the control arms and paint. Or buy entire new front Suspension. Decently would buy shocks and springs all around. But my concern is the control arms and Gussets. There also is a good amount of rust on the front driver shock tower area, right next to the UCA. Don't know how solid that is.

Basically what Im asking you all if you think this is worth the effort The frame is solid. Its a 2000 Limited 4runner with about 159k

Anyone know of any threads with pics of4runners that are on the fence regarding salvageability? About to pick one up from my wife's uncle not sure if it's a axel off job
