Worth the asking price?

Just wanted the opinion of a few of you guys here who know these trucks. A local guy has his '87 4Runner listed on Craigslist. It's got 247k on the body and a 5spd. Not too sure on other details, we spoke once briefly on the phone but if the truck runs as good as it looks, I'm pretty interested. My question is, is this worth the asking price? I realize that's a pretty subjective question and hard to say by pictures alone, but assuming all is well and its mechanically sound, what do you guys think?

the exterior is clean. I don't dig that weird paint on the side though but there's no pics of the interior.
to me that seems a little steep.. but that's just my opinion. wait for one of the more educated guys to lend some input!

The prices on these classic(1st and 2nd gen) trucks are creeping up, especially for the clean low mile, original examples(well documented). The devil is in the details for me. Being the truck is in, or from NJ, I would want to run a title check(corrupt DMV, title fraud/jumping, Sandy damage, or the like). If your not comfortable inspecting it, you might consider having someone who knows the mark look it over.
I don't view 5k is a lot for one of these if they meet the a for mentioned details. The number of the clean ones are disappearing. The standards the truck would have to meet for me to pay that number though, would have to be quite high. It's too bad it's not more original. Sorry for the convoluted answer. look at the front hubs from the oem rims and the new ones. I see something fishy but that may just be me. and its hard to tell without seeing the interior

There's nothing RARE about it, so claiming that is strike one.
New tires is a good selling point, but he should not expect to recoup his money on them.
But at $5500, it looks like he is and then some.
If the frame is solid (a key factor) and the inside is clean and it runs good, maybe $3000 max in the Mid-Atlantic area.

there must be a whole lot of nice ones down in your area if "$3000 max" is what you figure a clean, well-running 1st gen goes for.

from what i've seen, in much of the country, there are an awful lot of people trying to sell trashed/rusty/beat 1st gens for $1500 or so. no thanks. i'd rather buy one in good condition, and i'll gladly pay more for it.

i would have no problem selling that for $3000 around here (i'm pretty sure it would sell within hours of sticking it out front at that price), but i'd be asking more.

Yeah price on these can be hard to nail down. There's a guy on a Toyota facebook group that posted an '87 he wants $14,000 for. It was put away in storage in '97, and it's absolutely the most showroom condition 1st gen ive ever seen.

I've also runners with more-rust-than-body running OK fail to sell for a thousand dollars. I couldn't make a decision on that one - or most ones - with pictures alone. It really takes an in-person inspection. It's not rare, I don't like the idea of a custom paint job, or the custom graphics, and beyond the perfect (appearing) body it looks a bit above average to me. Based on little knowledge, I say $2500-$3500 depending on actual condition.

I would like to hope these trucks are gaining value. When the time's right I'll probably sell. I'd like $4500, but that's a pipe dream, and I have a few inches of rust. (And 310,000 on the clock)
