Would like to confirm tire size:

Hello, I have searched. I just wanted to confirm before I spend hundreds...can I fit with no issues 265/75/16 on my 99? I have 265/70/16s stock with the bigger towing brakes option.

p.s. - J.A.'s site is the only place I saw anything conclusive, just wanted to make sure it wasn't a "highlander only" deal.

Thanks fellas.

Should fit with no problems. Some owners have reported a slight rub at full lock and compression, but very few. You will notice a slight drop in MPG (~2MPG).

I went up a size on my old 4Runner and here is a comparison pics. Note these are with 17" rims, but the overall diameter was the same as the 16" sizes.

Don't know if you can tell, but fills out the wells much better.

I am going to go with BFG KO's in 265/75/16 on my Tacoma probably this week or next. Can't wait to get rid of these crappy Rugged Trails.

They will fit for sure. You may have a slight rub in the front when entering a steep driveway or inclide, at least that is what I have experienced.

tire size

I've been pricing new tires a size bigger than stock and nobody I've talked to has said anything negative. I.E. 4wheelparts discount tire ect. new to the forum hope I can help I've have seen alot of issues I can help with. thanks

do you want to run mudflaps ?

I have a 99 and the main reason I went to a lift was to be able to clear my 265/75/16s. Nittos. Chunky All Terrain Treads....31.7inches if I remember correctly.

Even today with 881s up front from Old Man Emu -I am again scraping my front mudflaps at 3/4 to full lock hard right or left turns. And in reverse. To offroad and not worry about them-I truly need to remove the front mudflaps or they will rub all day long on the trail while under compression.

I have to run the mudflaps or the spray down my bodysides is terrible- I do not (yet) have fender flares-just the chrome trim around the wheel wells. Frickin useless pos "pretty" trim you may have seen it....

A 265/70 is roughly a 9" wide footprint

A 265/75 is roughly a 8.5 wide footprint but of course a "taller" tire of more total circumference.

IF you already have the tall 99 springs you likely will be fine and not rub. But if you are the shorter stock springs like I was -you most definitely will rub your front mudflaps....

pnut you are running no mudflaps! (see pictures above) your opinion is sound but not complete in scope.

My long winded point is that there are several variables at play here.

Make sure you are getting the whole story.... and page back a few pages- this tire size topic is discussed monthly if not weekly. And much easier than search....:bash:

i've bought my 4Runner - 2001 Sp. Ed. with 265/75/16 Wrangler tires and have no problem.

You're right, I did not have mudflaps. However, plenty of people do have mudflaps and do not have issues. Even IF they did, it takes all of 5 minutes to take the mudflaps off. I know guys with the Tacoma mudflaps that have no issues, either. I can't see how this is going to be an issue. Perhaps if he were to have asked if 255/85/16's were going to fit and I told him no problem, then THAT would definitely not be "complete in scope", as the BFH mod is not comparable to a few screws and clips.

The width should be the same, as noted by the "265" on both tires. 265 mm = ~10.5 inches. 70 and 75 denotes the ratio of the sidewall compared to the width. Hence the 75's will have more sidewall, therefore "taller".

p nut, are those Sequoia rims? How much did they cost?

Yeah, those are Sequoia's. They were $300 with the tires (from a friend). Although, I probably wouldn't go that route again. The tire selection for the 265/70/17's were that great. I am going to stick to 16" rims.

That's a good price. I really want to get some new rims. I'm trying to figure out which ones to go with.

Yeah, wasn't a bad price. But you can find them for $400 without too much effort. Heck, set just went up for sale in my area for $400 with good tires.

But like I said, you're better off with 16" tires, IMO, just for the tire selection and price.

I see your point pnut but mine is that each year's spring heights can be slightly different, as one of several variables that may or may not interest the original poster miles racker.

Some folks do not want to encounter any kind of rubbing. Hence my comments regarding the mudflaps-now you and I are pretty fortunate out West we get so little moisture, but depending on the fender flares or lack of determines whether or not the sides of the body get splattered each time the vehicle is driven with any wetness on the roads.

My comparison of the 70 to a 75 is valid-Dunlop Gran Trek was the P265/70 size and the tread width was 9"-I just took this measurement a month back for another forum member. My Nittos at 265/75 are only 8.5.

Should they be exactly the same? yes they should according to tire calculators but in reality when compared side to side there is a subtle tread width and height difference.

My beef is when all you guys chime in on stuff you think you know absolutely but there are the variables involved that may not have affected your vehicle-but that do affect a different year of the 3rd gen.

Please do not consider this a slam on your opinions-you sir have personally helped me out several times and I do not want to make you think it is not appreciated.

I disagree with you politely but I stand my ground. I am the first to admit I don't know every single thing about the Runners-but what I do know from personal experience is just as valid as your own.

When you say you can't see how mudflaps would be an issue-that is easy-you are not running them so it does not affect you. I won't even get into trying to compare it to the 'Coma
fitment-there are a lot of differences even though the 2 vehicles are so similar in so many aspects

Miles racker-
Have a tire dealer show you the two sizes side by side at the same time. Preferably the same exact tire make and model . You may find that if they make the 265/70 they don't make the 265/75 so this comparison may never quite be "apples to apples".

Even between brands there may be sizing differences that may affect the rub of the mudflaps-the inner wheel well liners-even the edge of the fender flares.

Please do not just assume that because most of us have or can run the 265/75 size that it is without repercussions of one kind or another....

Personally- when I see water I want to blast right through it and not have to worry about painting it down my body sides like showing off my day at the mud bog....

Once my truck paint is no longer virtually flawless I may be right with ya pnut and not really give a crap if I do not need to run the mudflaps.

Don't assume that miles racker does or does not care about them-my point is that is one of the many variables to the upgrade tire size and how well it fits his actual vehicle.

That is true. However, mine was a 98 and didn't have problems. Most of the people that have various years ranging from 96-02 reported to have run 75 series stock have said the same. This is what I was going off of.

Ok, Ron, no offense intended, but you should use that same logic. You said in your first post that, quote:

"A 265/70 is roughly a 9" wide footprint

A 265/75 is roughly a 8.5 wide footprint but of course a "taller" tire of more total circumference."

This is simply not the case. You can take 10 measurements from 10 different tires with 265/70, and you will have 10 different measurements. Tire sizes, tread wear, road noise will all vary by tire make, even if they have the same ratings on paper. So you cannot simply take a measurement of your brand of tires and say that the measurements will be the same throughout.

I'll say once again, that it's not a big deal running 265/75's on stock runners. If you REALLY are anal about getting your sides dirty, either an aftermarket mudflap or a mudflap from a 4Runner from a junkyard will do the trick.

I don't see why this should prohibit someone from running this size.

not noticeable?

Good info guys. Just curious, is the reduction in mpg's consistent all around?

Did not notice any reduction in mileage with the 265/75s.

I see your point pnut on the logic issue. I will let it go at that.

Appreciate all the help from all you guys in talking this and all the other issues.

I will continue to politely point out "it depends" when folks ask if they can run 265/75s with no problems.

miles racker let us know what you get and how it works out for ya.

I have a newer set of '99 coils (the taller version) and with my Nittos I get zero rubbing on the mudflaps but that's not the case with all '99s.
