Would this be a good CB antenna mount place?

Hi all!

I'm looking to getting a cobra 75 and before I actually purchase it I'm trying hard to figure out a good place to mount the antenna. I've looked at several threads and not that happy with the under the hood mount.

1. Would this be a good place for the mount? Would it be strong enough to hold a 3' or 4' Firestik?

2. What is the name of the tool that is used to take these screws out? Where would I get it? Some kind of star pattern but not phillips.

They are called torx bits. they are sized like t-25, t-30 and so on. and yes the rack will hold your anntenna.

Thanks bulldogtaxi! I see that I can get them from amazon and I'm sure my local tools store. I'm hoping I can find one that'll fit between the roof and the rack.. perhaps like a wrench version.

I'm looking for a spot to mount an antenna and that looks better than anything I've thought of so far. Just use a plate and then mount the antenna on a folding mount, either fold forward to sideways depending on what works better. I need to look into that this weekend

They sell torx bits to fit a ratchet. Car stores usually sell a cheap kit in 1/4 drive.

Thanks offshorebear! Yea I was thinking if something like this would work.. (minus the bottom bracket and screws) where I could use both screw holes for better stability.

Have you thought about using a magnet mount that would let you take the antenna off when you don't need it rather then hard mounting?

In that thread he mentions the Wilson 5000 but I'm sure there are others out there if that one isn't what you are looking for.

I had considered it but decided to go with a fixed mount and a fold-down like offshorebear had mentioned. Plus I read that the magnetic mounts have a tendency to scratch the paint if you take it off - put it on for any reason.

I have a Wilson 5000 and absolutely love it. It does scratch up your roof though.

One warning though, I have read about other members who have tried mounting CB antennas on their roof rack and they really struggle to get their SWR reading down. It just is not grounded very well, apparently.

do you know how you're going to route the cable?

I have a ham radio in/on my t4r and am using a diamond mount on the lip of the lift-gate. It works really well and is designed for the cable to wrap right inside of the tailgate where i then route it through a hole in the body from the tail light into the rear compartment where the radio is...

works great but there weren't too many options for placing the antenna without drilling through the roof..

Pants, I'm going to route it from the roof back down to where the 3rd light and sirus radio lines go in to the vehicle. I just hope I don't have any issues with swr as Blair mentioned.

S-one, I just the cobra 75 myself and was wondering if you have any pictures of how you ended up mounting your antenna?
