I thought a long time about getting one of these. Then I thought..hey, why I don't I just drive a bit slower and save myself the possible headache. That was about 8 years ago and so far, so good.

I wonder if they are legal? I've heard people say they are illegal, so what does that mean if a cop pulls you over? I suspect it's different for every state? Be interesting to see how much time it buys you before you pass the occifer.

i've tried different brands in the past and just stuck with passport X50.. you can also go with V1 or beltronics RX65..

Illegal in Virginia, Washington D.C. and U.S. Military bases. States like Illinois, New York and Jersey it's illegal in certain types of commercial vehicles but legal in private/personal vehicles. This may have changed so do your research.

I use to have one and every time I went past a bank or a building with a certain type of security system it would go off. I've heard buildings with automatic opening doors can do it too.

Have a friend who's a cop and I'm directly quoting him on this, "Radar detectors work but only if the officer is using radar, which is rare these days. Speed enforcement is almost always done by lasar now. Most of those (detectors) will detect laser too, but it's worthless because a lasar is INSTANT... so it won't give you a heads up that a laser is being used in the area, it will just tell you that a laser hit your car (or immediate area) and now you're going to get pulled over."

NOTE: Being a cop has changed him a little. As you can tell from his quote he now sounds like a total douche. But, still good info.

ok, first off you need to understand that Cobra is the cheaper brand that you said you don't want. Most of their models are at Walmart, etc for less than 100 bucks. The particular model you are looking at is higher price because it has GPS - they are trying to keep up with Escort and Beltronics that have already done that (in the $500 range)

good advice - I use mine to avoid "mind fart" tickets when you let your speed creep up at just the wrong time with a trap ahead

all symptoms of the cheaper RDs or older technology - I experienced the same 15 years ago but RDs have come a long way - the more expensive ones have filters, so false alarms are not as common - with my passport false are rare

well yes and no - laser is more common but is more expensive and more effort to use - the officer must physically point it at a reflective surface like headlights or license plate on every car. So radar is still the most common in use at most areas

again yes and no - good detectors can also detect "scatter" - the reflections off other cars being clocked by laser (ahead or even behind you). I have had that a few times. But yes, if officer hits you alone then you probably only get an alarm that tells you just got a ticket. Also as side note - laser is not the only instant on - POP radar is also instant on - again the better RDs detect POP

Some final recommendations for OP
- one of price links I included above is on this site - has lots of info, reviews, and prices. Take a look at their comparison table
- avoid cheap - don't waste your money, buy good or don't buy at all. Cheap won't give you alarms soon enough (less distance), and worse than that will give you false as Slvr RnR said above - so eventually you will just ignore all alarm, so why have it
- GPS and camera databases are becoming more common - if many cameras in your area then perhaps worthwhile, but if so look at the more expensive (better) brands. This RD is on my wish list
- radar detectors are not a license to go crazy - they just give you some fair warning in case you are a bit over. Won't always save your butt from laser or POP, and will never save you from mobile cameras (databases cannot track those), airplanes, or a good old stop watch in the hands of an experienced officer
- drive safe - if you have an accident and investigating officer sees RD in your car, might assume you were at fault, even though could be legal in your location (again check legals in your state, or wherever you travel)

I also have a Passport 8500 X50 and that thing is amazing. I have used the cheaper Cobra's in the past and all they seemed to do is get me to the judge faster. I pretty much drive the speed limit most of the time. When the radar detector comes in handy is on the many selected roads around here that the speed limit is crazy slow. My passport will detect laser before I get lasered, not much before but before. I have a BEL in my other truck. More false alarms and a laser function that has never worked right. The BEL detects K and Ka bands almost as good as the Passport.

Radar Detector


Well, a good radar detector is obviously better than nothing at all; no doubt. Don't let it give you a false sense of security, however.
:driving:

No radar detector - at any price - is going to warn you about VASCAR, E.S.P., VisiCalc or a 'bear in the air' using a stopwatch and two fixed points on the ground, as none of them transmit any signal that you will be able to 'detect' or receive. Nor will it be an effective countermeasure to "instant on" radar, unless it picks up an officer's radar unit measuring the speed of a car a bit ahead of you.

One thing you might want to consider is a good CB radio; provided you can put up with the potty-mouth conversation of Channel 19. Along any highway with mile markers, monitoring the trucker channel is going to keep you posted as to the whereabouts of any cop in the state!

As a last resort, you can try staying within 5 to 10 mph of the posted limit; which will usually keep you out of trouble.

No I would not buy it.
My brother swears by radar dectors, I don't, never had one and probably never will. When traveling I try to pay attention to semis and have yet to get a ticket (knock on wood).
