Depends on the condition and service history. I bought my 99 from the original owner, always dealer serviced and was in fantastic condition. It had 249k miles and I paid $2,750, worth every penny.

Of course; you'll be hard pressed to find a 20yr old rig with less!
That said, I'd much rather buy a well maintained rig with 250k than a neglected rig with 180k.
When it comes to a 20yr old vehicle, how it's maintained is far more important than miles.

I bought our 98 with 230000 this past June for 2700$ Its seats were rough and needed a front bumper but I had our old 97 with a blown head gasket sitting in the weeds with all of the needed parts. I was happy as a clam to pay what I did.

I just bought one with 253k on it so yes... yes I would. As others have stated it’s really hard to find one with low miles hence the hefty price tags behind them once you do find one. I personally don’t know how well mine has been maintained it’s had 5ish owners but i went for it. Just know that for the most part you will need to invest to get it looking like these other runners on here(at least that’s my case). Just bought it yesterday btw.

I purchased mine a year ago with 267xxx miles and its barely seen the road. I got it a $2600, which isn't too bad for the condition it was in (worn out seats, dirty carpet, faded paint etc.) but I'm currently playing catch up on all maintenance since I think the PO neglected it during the time he owned. If I could do it again, I probably would've saved a bit more and waited for something in better condition.

I understand the logic of a lower mileage vehicles, however, this doesnt apply to the Toyota 4runner. I have 280k on mine, it is dependable and comfortable.
I would probably only buy the 3.4 six. My only concern is what i am going to buy after my beloved 4runner is gone.

lol, you can buy a complete engine and transmission with like 65k on them from japan for like $900, i would buy one with 500,000 miles on it if the price was decent and the truck was in decent shape.

Almost 250k on mine. I drove it literally across the country 4 times last year. This truck has been to more states in less than a year than most people have been to in their entire lives. If it's been well maintained and you continue to take care of it you shouldn't have any problems. But it is still an old high mileage vehicle so things will need upkeep and maintenance, but not anywhere near as much as most other cars of the same age and mileage. Just look how many are still on the road nearly 20 years after the last one was sold. That shows something about these trucks.

The two that I currently own were bought with 234,000(from the original owner) and 260,000. We’ve only put 10,000 miles on each with a few small repairs along the way.

I spent 6k on my 2002 Sport Edition with 273k on it. Many people said I was crazy (the majority of them not being 4Runner people). My point was that it had impeccable service records. The timing belt complete service had been done 3 times, regular service intervals at Toyota dealerships, just all-around great maintenance. I still service it at the dealership and get compliments every single time. I have even had service techs tell me to let them know if i decide to sell it. "High" mileage is relative with these vehicles. I drive mine daily at almost 280k on the original motor and trans. Motor is strong, trans is smooth as butter. When I had the valve cover gaskets changed, the heads were clean.
Just do your research. Someone somewhere could probably find something cheaper or better, always. Thats how it is when you're buying anything. Find what you can afford, and just make sure its been maintained well enough to handle the miles. High mileage alone should not deter you from buying a 4Runner. I get in and drive mine every day never worrying about whether or not its going to start or get me home. Good luck!

I paid 3K on a 01 at 189K miles odo. steal IMO. only thing wrong when i bought it was the infamous valve cover oil leak. purrs like a kitten. previous owner didnt know jack about fixing cars, so i coaxed him to lowering the price in grands due to the leaking oil. lol
