Would you buy an 09 4R ?

If the nest gen.5 is coming out as a 2010 to be released in 09 ( from what I heard ) would you buy an 09 or wait for the 10 since we dont now if they will make it a more of an adventure off road vehicle or a mall hopper.

Granted the 4th gen is not a off road friendly as the 3rd gen and so on , but its still extremely capable off road , tough , full boxed frame ect.... kinda rare for today's SUV.

If the next generation 4Runner loses it truck like characteristics (boxed frame, towing capacity, etc) or became overly bloated in
size or weight then I would probably look elsewhere for another vehicle.

If the next gen 4Runner adds a few more inches of wheelbase and pounds, keeps the box frame, towing capacity and adds a DIESEL ENGINE
option then it would be at the top of my list to consider.

To be honest off-road abilities are not extremely important to me personally.
Give me a 4Runner that can tow my trailer, is quiet, comfortable, reliable, does not cost an arm and a leg to maintain and easily deals with winter weather and I will be happy.

You just described the next generation Sequoia.

I'd like to see a two door 4Runner offered in addition to diesel. Maybe a convertable option too.

If it evolves into a unibody or has no ground clearance and follows the new design of the carlike Rav4 and Land Cruiser, then I will keep my '03 and drive it until it disentegrates.

Then I will move to another manufacturer. I do like the new Tahoe.
 
I would think the next gen 4Runner will be dropped before it goes unibody. The Highlander fills the unibody midsize SUV void in Toyota's lineup. I haven't wheeled my 4Runner yet, so I haven't concluded on the importance of that. I got 4WD, cause I don't want to get into the cold, stick my butt out and get grazed by big rigs installing tire chains when I can just flip the knob and continue on my way. I'll freeze on the mountains on my board, but not on the way to the mountain. :p

If and when time comes to replace the 4Runner because I still need 4WD or towing capabilities, and the 4Runner has either become a mall and street queen or gone unibody, I've got my eyes set on a Tundra CrewMax.

If the 4Runner does wimp out, it'll be a sad day in Toyota's SUV/truck offerings. The 4th gen is an excellent offering right now, smaller package with a V8 option, full time 4WD, and a nice stout fully boxed frame. It's a more heavy duty capable tow rig without the bulk.
 
I sincerely hope my 4th gen runners lasts as long as the 1st and 2nd gens I still see plenty of on the road. No need to worry about the 5th gen for a while (for me at least). I really doubt Toyota would make it unibody too. It does what it does so well as it is (in terms of body on frame design). Another disturbing trend we all see is that manufacturers tend to "grow" the dimensions of later generations of vehicles. Bigger in some cases is not better. Sure the 4th gen is larger than the 3rd gen, but I think its present size is just right. Not too big, not too small. The 4Runner really has a nice user base and I think there will always be a need and audience for it. It's fun as hell to drive too. Where I live, 4Runners may be dime a dozen (especially silver ones), however, when you do see one it stands out from the crowd. Am I biased? Of course, but damn proud to own one (err...two).

You never, ever see any Tahoe's off road tho, they're pretty "carlike" in my books :confused:

If the new 4R gets too soft....I'd just pick up a leftover 4rth gen, drive it and be happy. They drive so good and do everything already, it's not like you'd be settling.

Possibly the Hummer H3 now that it has a V8 or the Pathfinder also with a V8, or finally, a Jeep Grand Cherokee.

^ I'd rather put a lift kit and super swampers on a Camry than drive any of those 3 units LOL


Even if the 4R was cancelled altogether, honestly why not just stick with a 4rth gen instead of that junk?
 
I plan on driving this vehicle into the ground. I figure by then I'll be 29 or so (I'm 20 now) and my priorities might have changed a bit. Who knows. I think my next purchases will be in the sports car, motorcycle, and luxury car categories.

I can see the H3 or Jeep , but the Pathfinder has become a street SUV with the IRS to make the ride real posh.

I like the H3 , I've driven quite a few of them and honestly would have bought one of them instead of the 4R if it had a V8. The 5cyl is way underpowered and why GM put that in there instead of the 275 HP V6 is beyond me.

I'm not familiar with the new Jeep GC's , but always hated the Chrysler quality. I did rent an 04 GC when I was interested in getting one , it had an inline 6cyl , it did real well off road and was fun wheeling it.

You don't think it already is overly bloated? Wow, it's significantly longer, wider and heavier than the 3rd gen... in fact, virtually the same length as a landcruiser. Any longer and IMO it's no longer a "midsize" SUV, more of a mall boat.

Frankly I hate the massive plastic overhangs on the front, rear and sides. Any more of that on the 5th gen and I'll look elsewhere. If the Jeep GC proves to be reliable I might go for that... it's smaller, more responsive, and looks kinda cool in a minimalist way. Shame the gas mileage sucks.

I tow. The forthcoming 4Runners will have inadequate torque to tow a heavy/aerodynamically demanding trailer (as did my '03 V8).

We now drive a VW Touareg. (553 lb/ft, V10 diesel w/ 6spd)

Sorry, Toyota, you just don't get it.

The VW Touareg has a a V10 diesel and a 6 speed with 553 ft/lbs ??????

Nice that you have the knowledge of the "forthcoming 4Runners" I guess your the only one.
